Course Contents
The course aims to delve into all aspects of the treatment of patients with acute medical and surgical pathologies. In particular, it will be illustrated how to treat the patient according to a universally recognized and prioritized method "XABCDE".

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to enable the students to analyze the clinical problems for the most part known to the students, according to a methodology specific to the emergency conditions. This methodology comes out of the traditional schemes of the nosographic classification of diseases trying to go through the criteria for defining severity and symptomatic approach, postponing the goal of a refined and definitive diagnosis.
Furthermore, the course aims to provide students with the information and tools necessary to implement basic resuscitation maneuvers, deal with emergency clinical situations, adequately treat the most common pain syndromes, and profitably use analgesics, sedatives, hypnotics and local anesthetics.
Prerequisites
In order to understand the contents of the lessons and the learning objectives, the student must have a solid foundation of physiology, pathophysiology and clinical pharmacology, as well as the ability to integrate information from different disciplinary sectors.
Teaching Methods
Theoretical lessons: MS Power-Point presentations, educational videos, presentation of clinical cases. Simulation of clinical cases.
Practical exercises: Intensive Care Units, Pain Medicine and Operating Rooms, simulation rooms.

Expected Learning Outcomes
We expect the students to know and understand the basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocol and how to activate the emergency system; we also expect him/her to know and understand the particularities of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the peculiarities of the approach to the polytrauma patient. The student should come to know how and when to administer oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation. The student should know when to request the intervention of an intensivist . The students should also be able to gain more in-depth knowledge of basic neurological, respiratory and hemodynamic monitoring. We expect them to develop basic knowledge on acute and chronic pain. They will have to be able to recognize the problems related to the management and prevention of sepsis Finally, they will have to recognize and know how to treat all types of shock: hypovolemic, distributive, obstructive and cardiogenic.
