Observation at the optical microscopy of the histological specimens relative to the course of Histology and Embryology

Knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the human, and rodent tissues from histological specimens. Ability of identifying human tissues and cells. Moreover the students will acquire judgemnt indipendence, knowledge on histology and comunications skills

Basic knowledges of cytology and biology

Introductory lectures to explain how to observe histological sections under the microscope followed by direct observation of histological sections under the optical microscope

An initial written exam with multiple-choice questions to be completed on a computer (in common with the Human Histology and Embryology course). Once a student passes the written exam, there will be given an oral exam involving observation of a histological preparation under a light microscope. Students must be able to recognize and describe the histological preparation.

Knowledge of the main histological stains and the use of the various microscopes available in histology. Theoretical knowledge acquired simultaneously in the Human Histology and Embryology course: - Epithelial tissues. Cytoplasmic and surface specializations, related to protective, mechanical, barrier and transport functions. - Classification, structure. Tegumentary system - Exocrine glandular epithelia. Structure and classification. Histology of salivary glands, Brunner’s glands, exocrine pancreas - Endocrine glandular epithelia. Histology of thyroid, adrenal gland, pancreatic islets. Blood, bone marrow. Histology of thymus, spleen, Cartilage and bone tissue. Muscular tissue: skeletal, smooth, cardiac. Nervous tissue.

Ability to use the optical microscope; - ability to recognize and describe histological sections of normal tissues constituting the human organism; - ability to understand the basic tools for cellular and tissue investigation and the methods for their study
