The course aims to enable the students to analyze the clinical problems for the most part known to the students, according to a methodology specific to the emergency conditions. This methodology comes out of the traditional schemes of the nosographic classification of diseases trying to go through the criteria for defining severity and symptomatic approach, postponing the goal of a refined and definitive diagnosis.
The course also aims to present the main aspects relating to locoregional and general anesthesia and to propose the most relevant aspects of clinical pain management.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted
the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination
modalities, concerning academic aspects.

The assessment of learning will take place through a written test and an oral exam. The written exam is a multiple-choice test consisting of 64 questions (passed with 38 correct answers, equivalent to 60%). The written test will be conducted on PC classroom exams, and the questions must be answered sequentially. Only upon passing the written test can the oral exam be taken. The oral exam consists of the discussion of 1 clinical/care case in Emergency/Urgent Care and Intensive Care Nursing. Maximum time: 15 minutes. Evaluation criteria: - 25-30 points if the answer is comprehensive, recognizes the priority care needs/problems, and manages them correctly - 18-24 points if the answer is partially comprehensive, partially recognizes the priority care needs/problems, and does not manage them completely correctly - 0 points if the answer is insufficient, does not recognize the priority care needs/problems, and cannot manage them correctly. The final grade is expressed as

1) Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS).
2) Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ALS).
3) Systematic approach to the polytrauma patient
4) Acute airway management
5) Principles of monitoring
6) Management of acute and chronic pain
7) Alterations of consciousness, coma, clinical and legal aspects of brain death
8) Oxygen therapy, invasive and non-invasive ventilation
9) Preventing infections in a critical environment

We expect the students to know and understand the basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocol and how to activate the emergency system; we also expect him/her to know and understand the particularities of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the peculiarities of the approach to the polytrauma patient. The student should come to know how and when to administer oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation. The student should know when to request the intervention of an intensivist by recognizing the criteria for the application of non-invasive and invasive ventilation. The students should also be able to gain more in-depth knowledge of basic neurological, respiratory and hemodynamic monitoring. We expect them to develop basic knowledge on acute and chronic pain. They will have to be able to recognize the problems related to the management and prevention of sepsis. Finally, we expect them to learn the clinical and legal aspects of brain death.
