Detailed Syllabus
o) Degree of penetration of radiation inside tissues

o) Fluence, fluence rate, energy fluence rate. Energy transfer coefficient; average energy to create a ion-electron pair

o) Dosimetric quantities: energy deposited in a given volume; absorbed dose, kerma, exposure; relationship between exposure and absorbed dose; equivalent dose, effective dose, committed dose.

o) Source of external irradiation, natural and artificial. Typical dose in various diagnostic procedures.

o) Laws and regulations; ICRP publications 60 1990 and 103 2007.

o) Radiation protection principles: justification, optimisation, individual dose limitation

o) Limits for occupational exposure and for the public. Qualified expert. Classification of areas; classification of workers. Medical surveillance.

o) Radiation shielding: charged particles, photons and neutrons.

o) Biological effects of static and variable magnetic fields; radio-frequencies. ICNIRP guidelines; European and Italian laws.
