Course Contents
Knowledge about materials science, dental materials, conservatives and endodontics are essential for the training of dental hygienists.
The course is aimed to provide fundamental knowledge on materials and dental materials.
The course is aimed to provide knowledge and skills about the etiopathogenesis of caries and its complications and the way to provide restorations.
The student must acquire competence and ability in recognizing dental materials, the procedures for their handling and their appropriate application. The student must acquire competence and ability in prevention of caries

Learning Outcomes
To provide basic knowledge of materials science and dental materials science.
To provide the knowledge for the appropriate choice of materials for the prevention and treatment of dental and oral diseases with reference also to the follow up. To provide knowledge and skills for the right handling and application of dental materials applied to oral hygiene. To provide the knowledge and skills to recognize the correct clinical application of materials and their state of wear and degradation.
To provide information about the main diseases and treatments of the dental mineralized tissues and dental pulp. To provide information and to develop skill for their prevention.

Fundamentals of physics, chemistry, anatomy, histology, microbiology, radiology
Teaching Methods
Class and teaching material (videos, presentations, scientific articles) for self-training. Laboratory lesson with practical integration

Assessment Methods
Written test based on statment verification and commentary and open questions.
The marks of the individual modules are extracted in 33/33 (33 = honors)
The test is passed if the average of the modules is greater than or equal to 18/30 and no more than one module is less than 15/30

Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student must have the basic knowledge of materials and dental materials sciences.
She/He must also possess a) the knowledge for materials application and b) the skill for their manipulation. He must be able to recognize the type of materials clinically installed clinically and must know how to evaluate the status.
She/He must also possess the specific knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of the dental diseases and the main therapeutic solutions.
The theoretical knowledge, combined with the activity carried out during the internship, must give the student the competence and ability to carry out her/ his clinical activity independently.
