- Brief summary of the different human tissues - General characteristic of stem cells - Description of stem cell types and localization - Description of methods for stem cell isolation, growth and maintenance in culture - Introduction to stem cell-based therapy in preclinical and clinical settings

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to describe: - The general characteristics of stem cells - where the different stem cells are located - the functions of stem cells in humans - the processes of cell differentiation - the potential benefits and risks of using stem cells in medicine

Basic notions of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology

Classroom lectures and Power Point presentations (uploaded to DIR at the end of each lesson). Insights by reading scientific articles suggested by the teacher

- Brief summary of body organization (cells, tissues, organs) - Stem cells and regeneration - Main stem cells characteristics and functions: embryonic and adult stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells - Stem cell localization and differentiation in different tissues (symmetric and asymmetric division) - Embryonic and adult stem cell isolation, characterization and maintenance in culture - Regulation of stem cell differentiation - Biology and applications of hematopoietic, mesenchymal and neural stem cells - Stem cell-based therapies: nowadays and future applications
Expected Learning Outcomes
Basic knowledge of stem cell biology, localization, functions and their potential application in regenerative medicine
