Learning Outcomes
Provide students a suitable knowledge in plant biotechnology with particular attention to crop and pharmaceutical plants. The course also aims to train students in the language of plant biology applied to in vitro culture techniques and plant transformation.
Prerequisites
The teacher does not advise to address the study of matter without the appropriate culture provided by plant biology and molecular biology. The student should also have a property of language and scientific mastery.

Assessment Methods
The purpose of the exam is to verify the level of knowledge into all the subjects present in the course program and the reasoning capacity developed by the student. The exam is a written test (75 minutes); it consists of both multiple-choice questions (16-18) and open questions (theoretical and practical parts) (3-4); in particular, the test includes theoretical questions and exercises to evaluate the knowledge and skills acquired. Open questions are judged for content and scientific language. The score assigned for each application is indicated. The final grade is expressed in thirtyth (minimum 18) and will take the partial votes obtained in the each question. However, to overcome the test, or to be sufficient (18/30), the student must respond correctly to the 60% of open questions and 60% of multiple choice questions. No penalty will be applied if the answer is wrong. It is not permitted, during the test, to consult any type of material.
Detailed Syllabus
History and scope of plant biotechnology; in vitro plant tissue cultures; micropropagaton and maintenance of cultures cell lines; somatic embryogenesis and organogenesis. Biofertilizers, bioproductions and biomasses. From the laboratory scale to the industrial scale: bioreactors. Phytoremediation of contaminated soils and waters.
Transgenic plants; resistance/tolerance of biotic and abiotic stress; qualitative traits improvement plant of economic interest and their impact on human health; principal regolamentation and ethical aspects.
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should have learned the main methodologies of plant biotechnologies, their possible uses in the various fields of biology and the most important characteristics that make the plant cell an excellent candidate for these uses. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS - know the main culture techniques of plant cells and whole organs - know the characteristics and potential of plant cells that make them suitable for processing and regeneration. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - Ability to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired through the course with those derived from other lessons COMMUNICATION SKILLS - Use an appropriate scientific language in oral and written communication - Demonstrate skill to recognize essential informations and to present them. JUDGMENT AUTONOMY - Being able to read the results deriving from different methods used in plant biotechnologies, with particular attention to their applicability in the various biotech-fields (industrial, medical, environmental, etc). LEARNING SKILLS Be able to describe scientific topics related to plant biology, embryogenesis and genetic engineering. This skill will be developed through the active involvement of students through oral discussion of the covered topics.
