Learning Outcomes
Module Analytical Chemistry: knowledge of the equilibria in solution (acid-base, precipitation, complexation, redox), Calculation of the activity of ionic species in solution, knowledge of Electrolytic cells, Electrodes, Volumetric analytical methods, introduction to electrochemical, spectrophotometric, spectroscopic and chromatographic analytical methods. Abilities: the students will be able to face and solve problems about chemical equilibria and to carry out a bibliographic search. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to chemical equilibria and the analytical techniques described in the course and to present a case study by multimedia presentations. Judgment skills: know how to draw conclusions on the presence of competitive balances; knowing how to choose the most reliable sources to solve a case study. Learning skills: knowing how to use the acquired knowledge and database research to solve a case study.Chemometrics. Knowledge: provide the student with the mastery of the statistical knowledge required in chemistry. Ability to choose the correct statistical test in situations most often found in chemistry. Abilities: knowing how to apply the correct statistical test to practical situations. Judgment skills: ability to draw the correct conclusions from the application of statistical tests. Communication skills: being able to report the result of a statistical test correctly.
Prerequisites
General and Inorganic Chemistry
Teaching Methods
Lectures, powerpoint presentations, classroom and computer tutorials, lecture notes, classroom discussions. Students will be asked to exhibit a case study assigned in class by a powerpoint presentation.
Additional Information
The control of learning during the course will be carried out through exercises and discussions in the classroom.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/servicesstudents-physical-or-learning-disabilities.
Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Written exam consisting of 8 questions on problems related to equilibria and 3 on statistical problems, aimed at evaluating theoretical knowledge (open questions), skills (solving exercises), judgment skills (providing a choice or critical judgment); the two parts of the written exam can be performed at different times at the request of the student. Oral exam consisting of a question of choice and 2 questions of the teacher on topics covered during the course, aimed at evaluating theoretical knowledge (open questions), autonomy of judgment (knowing how to deal with problems with multiple equilibria), communication skills (use of an appropriate vocabulary). During the oral examination, the presentation of a case study assigned to the lesson will be required through a powerpoint presentation, aimed at evaluating learning abilities, communication skills and critical sense.
To pass the test the student must at least demonstrate to know and understand the basics on chemical equilibrium and their interactions, both theoretical and for the solution of exercises, as well as to know the basic concepts on the techniques covered in class. Excellence can be achieved by demonstrating solid theoretical and practical bases in the treatment of competitive equilibria, also in the solution of exercises, and by demonstrating solid knowledge on the techniques it treats in class, demonstrating ability of comparison and critical sense.
Detailed Syllabus
Analytical Chemistry: calculation of the activity of ionic species in solution, Equilibria in solution (acid-base, precipitation, complexation, redox), Repartition equilibria between immiscible solvents, Electrolytic cells, Electrodes, Volumetric analytical methods, Introduction to electrochemical, spectrophotometric, spectroscopic and chromatographic analytical methods. Execution of a bibliographic research by means of database research, methods of solving case studies and selection of the most reliable bibliographic sources, methods for the effective display of scientific results through multimedia tools.
Chemometrics: Statistical descriptors. Statistical dependence and relative implications. Probability distributions (normal, t-Student, F-Fisher, Chi-Square, Poisson, binomial, uniform) and their use. The statistical test (structure, target, alpha and beta errors). Parametric and not parametric tests (introduction and examples of utilization). Experimental designs for evaluating the effects significance.
