A strong command of the English language has become an essential skill for professionals working in the field of Information Technology. For this reason, there is a need to offer IT students a practical and easy-to-learn English course aimed at improving their English communication skills (e.g., listening, speaking, reading and writing). The acquisition of these new language skills will enable students to communicate effectively in spoken and written English with foreign employers, business partners and colleagues.

The aims, objectives and functions are those recommended to attain a B2 competence level according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). At the end of the course, the student will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling and/or working where the English language is spoken. In addition, the student will be able to provide reasons and explanations for his/her plans or opinions. The student will also improve his/her pronunciation and listening comprehension skills. The overall goal of the course is to provide students the tools to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of English and their ability to apply this knowledge independently in the work environment.

The attainment of a B1 (intermediate) competence level is highly recommended. This can be accomplished by a placement test on the Macmillan Education platform available to all UPO students. Previous international English certifications may exempt the student from this course if the certifications comply with the criteria in the CLUPO guidelines.

Lectures and classroom activities.

All students of the three-year degree course in Information Technology are recommended to take a computerized English Placement Test as per CLUPO guidelines. This placement test does not replace the English exam, even in the event the student has achieved a level > B2. The objective of the entry test is verification of the student’s English competence level according to the international CEFR parameters.
It is highly recommended that students with an A1 (elementary) or A2 (pre-intermediate) level attend the A2 and B1 support courses on the new Macmillan Education platform in preparation for the English course MF0397 (B2-upper-intermediate).

The final exam will assess the student’s newly acquired English language skills. The test will consist of 45 multiple-choice closed questions based on all topics addressed throughout the course, from the textbook and materials provided by the teacher. The questions will focus on grammar, comprehension and listening. The exam will be calibrated on a B2 level (upper-intermediate) according to the CEFR parameters.
The grading system will be expressed on a scale from 1 to 30.

c) Grammar, syntax, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading and comprehension of written texts commensurate with a B2 level

With their new language skills, students will be able to express themselves spontaneously and fluently in oral communication in English and clearly and concisely in written communications. As a result of this training course, students will strengthen their knowledge and understanding of English (B2 upper-intermediate level) and their ability to apply this knowledge independently in the workplace.
