Learning Outcomes
The objectives of this corse include: 1) acquisition of the basics of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, 2) understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the action of the main classes of drugs, 3) aquisistion of basis of advanced rherapies.
Prerequisites
In order to achieve the intended learning outcomes, the student must have a solid background in molecular biology, anatomy, physiology and general pathology.

Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written test on "Esami Dir" and is made up of 6 open -ended questions and the time available is two hours. Each question are attributed from 0 to 5 points. Questions will focus on basic concepts of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and on the mechanisms of action and therapeutic applications of the drug classes covered during the class.
To achieve a passing grade, the sum of the scores of the questions must be at least 18. To achieve the laude, the sum of the scores must be 30 and the answers must demonstrate a critical mind and the ability to connect.
Detailed Syllabus
General Pharmacology: -Drug development: preclinical and clinical phase -Pharmacodynamics: receptors and signal transduction; concept of agonist and antagonist, dose-response curve. -Pharmacokinetics: absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs. Basic concepts of gender pharmacology: gender differences in pharmacokinetics and in the characteristics of some drug classes. Biotech drugs: therapeutic proteins, monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, gene therapy Special Pharmacology: - Diabetes drugs: insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents -Anti-dyslipidemic drugs - Anti-inflammatory drugs: NSAIDs, glucocorticoids - Chemotherapeutic drugs - Drugs for the cardiovascular system: anti-arrhythmic drugs, heart failure drugs, antithrombotic drugs and anticoagulant drugs - Respiratory system drugs - System nervous system: synapses and neurotransmitters; antidepressive drugs; anti Parkinson drugs; antipsychotic drugs; sedative-hypnotic drugs. Integration of the gender dimension: where of interest, attention will be paid to gender pharmacology.
Expected Learning Outcomes
According to the Dublin descriptors D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will know and understand the basic notions of general pharmacology and the pharmaco-toxicological characteristics of substances of abuse and of different classes of drugs. D2- ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will acquire the ability to use the theoretical knowledge imparted in class to reason critically, demonstrating that they are able to make connections between the different topics and to apply the knowledge acquired in the context of clinical analyses of different drugs or toxic substances. D3- JUDGMENT ABILITY: The student will acquire the ability to critically examine the theoretical notions acquired and to be able to independently argue the problems arising from their practical application. D4-COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student will acquire the ability to disseminate the knowledge assimilated using a specific and appropriate vocabulary in order to be able to compare themselves in a professional and competent manner in the academic and subsequently working environment. D5-LEARNING SKILLS: The student will acquire a learning ability useful for continuous and constant updating regarding the procedures to be performed in the context of a clinical analysis laboratory
