Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying major diseases.
By the end of the course, students will have learned the key pathophysiological mechanisms involved in cardiovascular, endocrine, and nutrition-related diseases, and will have acquired knowledge of the main molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tumor development.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biochemistry, biology, physiology, genetics and general pathology.

Assessment Methods
Oral examination to verify the level of knowledge and understanding of the course contents and to evaluate the autonomy of judgment, the ability to learn and the ability to correctly use scientific terminology. A 30-point scale is used for grades. To pass the exam (18/30 or more) the student must know and have understood at least the basic notions related to the causes and mechanisms responsible for the diseases covered in the course. To obtain 30/30 cum laude, the student will have to answer all questions with outstanding competence and knowledge and using the appropriate terminology.
Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to the study of pathophysiology. Water- and fat-soluble vitamins and their deficiencies. Protein-energy malnutrition. Fluid and electrolyte balance. Acid-base balance. Cardiovascular pathophysiology. Atherosclerosis. Liver pathophysiology. Endocrine pathophysiology. Diabetes mellitus. The causes and biology of cancer. Aging.
The laboratory part will be focused on the techniques commonly used to study causes and mechanisms of disease. Practice and theory of: - techniques and experimental strategies - set up of an experiment - interpretation of the results.
Expected Learning Outcomes
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: In-depth knowledge of the pathogenic mechanisms underlying major diseases, with a specific focus on cardiovascular, endocrine, oncological, and nutrition-related pathophysiology. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Ability to apply theoretical knowledge to laboratory practice and to correctly interpret experimental data within a pathophysiological context. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: Ability to critically analyze complex pathological conditions by integrating information from various scientific sources. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Appropriate use of scientific terminology to clearly communicate pathophysiological concepts in both academic and professional settings. LEARNING SKILLS: Ability to study independently and to continuously update knowledge on topics related to pathophysiology.
