Both people and society are in deep crisis in XXth century Spain: the long and inexorable decadence of Spain from an historical and political point of view accompanies the existential crisis that characterizes all the western world, according to philosophical nihilism. The cours aim is to analyse three different visions: the fierce satire of José de Larra; the avant-garde drama by Jacinto Grau, that deals with the theme of the relationship between creator and creation, so related to the contemporary abuse of IA, and the pedagogic and positive vision of Alejandro Casona, one of the exiled writers after the Civil War.

In order to reach a sufficient level, student must be able to recognize the main characteristics of an author or a text in relation to the history of Spanish Literature and theater of the XIXth and XXth centuries. In order to acquire superior skills, student must be able to show a critical ability to establish the relationship between a text or a play and the corresponding literary code, the ability to explain and defend her/his own opinion in a literary discussion, and employ an appropriate terminology.

Lectures Textual analysis

The oral examination consists in a discussion about the themes and subjects illustrated in class. The first question is about the general contextualization of authors and works from an historical and literary perspective; the following questions are about the specific works that have been analyzed in class. The examination takes about 20 minutes and the number of questions isn’t quantifiable, because the maieutic method implies a constante dialogue between student and professor.

The student must show to be able to analyze and contextualize both the texts treated in class, and the esthetic movements of Spain and Europe at the end of XIXth century and the beginning of XXth century. The student must show as well transversal competencies such as the ability of establish links between an artistic movement and the concrete literary creations of the authors that have been treated in class, and the autonomy of judgment in analyzing themes, motives, stilistic and esthetic characteristics, language uses, ideological, historical and cultural implications.
