History of German Literature (18th and 19th centuries)

Ability to: - briefly illustrate the intellectual biography of the most important authors as well as the main characteristics of the movements of modern German literature (18th and 19th centuries) and place them in the appropriate historical-cultural context - critically analyze the texts read and discussed during the course - critically re-elaborate the notions learned both during the course and through the autonomous reading of the texts.

None. The course will be held in Italian. It should be noted, however, that short prose and verse texts will be read in German, then translated by the lecturer and analyzed in Italian.

The test consists of an oral exam in Italian, divided into questions that will focus on the following points: - knowledge of the history of German literature of the 18th and 19th centuries as well as of the context in which authors and movements are placed: 50% of the exam mark. - ability to critically analyze the works, expressing original thoughts and opinions on the subject and to develop a critical discourse on authors or texts: 50% of the exam mark. The overall evaluation will take into account the ability to have an overview of the development lines of the history of German literature, the knowledge of the texts and authors included in the program, the ability to apply this knowledge to text hermeneutics and to express oneself using the proper terminology.

The course includes two introductory lessons, dedicated to a quick overview of German literature from its origins to the 17th century. Following this necessary introduction, the main German literary movements of the 18th and 19th centuries (Enlightenment/Haskalah, Sturm und Drang, Classicism, Romanticism, Vormärz, Biedermeier, Realism, Naturalism) will be discussed in class, focusing on the analysis of some of the most important and representative texts of the main authors. The primary objective is to integrate the study of the history of literature, which the students will carry out independently by reading the indicated sections of volumes 1 and 2 by Elena Ratti. Monothematic lessons will be dedicated to the analysis of the listed literary works, of which the most relevant elements will be pointed out and explained in the light of recent critical essays. The specific objective of the aforementioned lessons will be the theoretical learning and the subsequent practical application of hermeneutical skills, which can then be transferred to other literary works. Finally, it should be noted that great attention will be paid to the main authors of the classical-romantic era and, in particular, to the biography and work of Novalis and Heinrich Heine.
