Le esercitazioni linguistiche di Lingua Inglese 2 hanno come obiettivo primario di sviluppare le competenze grammaticali, lessicali, morfo-sintattiche e discorsive (sia in codifica, sia in decodifica) dell’inglese contemporaneo, con riferimento a tematiche di ordine comune, legate per esempio a eventi di attualità. Per complessità e articolazione, il programma, i contenuti e le attività svolte, la prova richiesta al termine del corso, nonché le modalità di valutazione applicate, fanno riferimento ad aree di competenza upper-intermediate B2-B2+ del CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)

English Language 1 (English Language Practical Classes 1).

Practical activities for decoding (reading comprehension), encoding (paragraph writing), grammatical skills (exercises), oral interaction focussed on general and/or specific topics of everyday communication (ex. current events). Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

ALL THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE COMPULSORY TEXTS (see above). Practical Classes will start in September 2024 and will end in June 2025. Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities. Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

WRITTEN EXAM: 1. Reading Comprehension of a 500-word text, followed by lexical/word meaning exercises: 30’ minutes. Reading comprehension activities aim to develop the student’s skills in reading-understanding various topics from different sources (newspapers, magazines, brochures, etc.), they also help to improve the lexis of contemporary English. Exercises include collocations and phrases, meaning of words, meaning in context, etc. 2. Sentence translation activities:Italian-English: 30’ minutes. 3. Paragraph writing: 60’ minutes. Starting from an outline on well-known topics, students will write a 250/300-word paragraph. Paragraph writing aims to assess grammar, lexis, spelling, and punctuation in a well-organised text. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES II YEAR Written exam (2 hrs) Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: different sections of the written exam. 2nd-year students have to pass the reading comprehension/lexis, sentence translation, and paragraph writing (min. 18/30 for all of them). With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good. Oral interaction skills, language competence, and fluency (discourse structure, pronunciation, lexis, morphosyntax, and linguistic appropriateness) will be assessed by Laura Tommaso on the occasion of the English Linguistics A exam.

English Language Practical Classes 2 are based on the textbooks listed above, and on further materials analysed during the year (see DIR).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to read and understand texts of medium complexity in contemporary English, of general contents and/or on current issues.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
They will also translate sentences and relate the fundamental structures of English and Italian. They will also be able to write short/medium length paragraphs, and to have a conversation on general/current issues.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
