Spanish Lingusticis and Spanish Language III

The objective of the course is for the student to acquire an advanced level knowledge of Spanish, in particular of syntax. From the recognition of complex morphosyntactic structures (sentence and period syntax) to the understanding of idiomatic expressions and semantic nuances of Spanish. We will broaden our view to the dimension of the diatopic/diastratic varieties of the Iberian language, studied contrastively. The linguistic competence expected is intermediate-advanced (at least C1.1 level) of the CEFR.

Pass at 2nd year level (both Spanish Linguistics A and Spanish Language II = LINGUA SPAGNOLA II)

Lectures, exercises with case discussions. In the exercises part, students will be called upon to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the 2nd and 3rd year. There will be individual, weekly, domestic and in-class activities, with discussion of errors and presentation of case examples.
The course is based on the material contained in the texts listed in the bibliography and extra material distributed in class or uploaded onto the DIR platform. Other activities will be carried out in class to reinforce and consolidate language skills in order to achieve the course objectives.
Students will be constantly invited to work on error, as a source of enrichment in language learning, and on language self-awareness. There will be activities with discussion of errors, presentation of exemplary cases.

Every year, a Vademécum is published on all the Dir pages of Spanish Language and Linguistics, providing detailed information on exams, appeals, DSA and compensatory measures, Erasmus, etc. It is compulsory reading for all students.

Written and oral tests for the individual modules. The assessment of competences and skills will take into account both the results of the two partial courses and the development of critical competence as a whole. As this is an examination that closely integrates the two partial modules, both of which are the responsibility of the teacher: average between the two parts. It is in any case necessary to obtain at least 18/30 in both parts.

Linguistics: Written exam (2½ hours). It consists of: 1) two open questions on topics of Spanish Morphosintaxis/Dialectology, to be answered concisely, and with linguistic precision, setting out the salient problems; 2) Linguistic commentary on a short text, highlighting the main phenomena. Theoretical awareness of the linguistic fact (norm, variety and exception), and its formulation; conscious analysis of the dialect text will be assessed. The final grade will result from the average of the two parts. In order to pass the examination, the student must obtain at least 18/30 in both parts - if this is not the case, he/she will have to re-sit the entire paper at a later appeal. An exam will be assessed as excellent if it demonstrates: an organic and in-depth vision of the themes addressed in the course; developed capacity for analysis and synthesis; excellent mastery of specific vocabulary and linguistic concepts; capacity for theoretical elaboration through the rich use of relevant examples. A paper will be assessed as fair if it demonstrates: an only sometimes mechanical knowledge of the subject; appropriate and correct language; the ability to analyse and summarise; good use of exemplification in relation to theoretical exposition. A test will be assessed as sufficient if it demonstrates: basic knowledge of the programme (notions and method), sometimes in mnemonic form, but with an awareness of the methodology used; basic and correct use of linguistic terminology; presentation of appropriate examples in the treatment. A paper will be graded as insufficient if it demonstrates at least one of these traits: major training gaps; erroneous learning of notions/concepts or methodology; inappropriate language; the pure reproduction/listing of notions or definitions, lacking the required conceptual links; lack of orientation within the subject examined and the method used; scarcity, absence or incorrect use of examples.
Lectorate: Examination: two written tests: 1) grammar exercises - completion / transformation / reformulation / guided response - + composition in language (220-250 words approx.); 2) translation with dictionary. Oral: assessment of oral skills (comprehension / expression, also from the compulsory readings) according to the level indicated. To pass the written part you must obtain at least 18/30 in both parts - if not, you will have to re-sit the entire written part at a later appeal. The written part will be passed if you provide at least 60% correct answers in the grammatical exercises, and demonstrate, in composition in the language, and in translation, a correct use of the syntax of the period, and the grammaticality of the written expression (for the level indicated).- An oral test will be adequate in which the student is able to communicate fluently on complex topics (also related to the readings), with a variety of vocabulary, morphology and syntax, using grammatically correct forms. The final grade will result from the average between written and oral. A minimum mark of 18/30 must be achieved in both the written and the oral examination in order to pass the examination.

Uses the language flexibly for social, professional and academic purposes. - Can produce clear, linguistically constructed and detailed texts, even on complex topics, showing, in this context, good control of textual structure, connectors and cohesive elements.
