English Language Practical Classes Specialistica A (LM 49) is focussed on practical activities (written and oral) in the field of tourism, and marketing of tourism (English for Tourism, EfT)

The general contents and specific topics, language skills and activities, the end-of-course examination, as well as the assessment criteria applied, refer to an advanced C1/C2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

Language skills at an advanced level: min. B2+, but C1 is preferred (CEFR).

Practical activities for decoding (authentic materials/sources), encoding (teamwork and self-study), work on a project, grammatical skills; oral interaction focussed on professional issues/settings.
Self-study and activities previously introduced during practical classes.

Practical Classes will start in October and will end in June.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRACTICAL CLASSES SPECIALISTICA A is a TWO-STEP ASSESSMENT-ASSIGNMENT.

1st STEP: self-study and personal/individual project
2nd STEP: oral presentation of the personal/individual project

Your practical classes final mark is the average of all your grades: personal/individual project (written version) and oral exam (project presentation and discussion).

To sit the Practical Classes Specialistica A oral presentation, students have to pass the personal/individual project (to receive a positive mark min. 18/30 in their project written version).

With reference to the 'Intended learning objectives' (see below), the following grades correspond to different skills: 18-22/30-sufficient, 23-25/30-satisfying, 26-28/30 good, 29-30 lode-very good.

Students are due to sit both their written and their oral exams in the same exam session (appello).

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

WRITTEN TEST The assessment includes a written exam that requires the careful reading and comprehension of a media article in English related to the tourism sector. Students will be asked to rework the content of the text, demonstrating their ability to summarise, use appropriate specialist vocabulary, and apply language skills suited to the professional context of tourism. TWO-STEP ASSESSMENT-ASSIGNMENT: 1) The exam consists of an assignment (personal/individual project) based on methods, criteria, and procedures already discussed and applied during the year: students are required to organise a trip/vacation itinerary in Italy, starting from a precise outline provided by the teacher. The itinerary will include detailed descriptions of local history, local arts and crafts, traditional food and drink, accommodation, museums and monuments, places of interest, costs, etc. After this first step, the teacher will review the first draft and suggest changes/improvements if necessary. 2) The assignment will be definitely written according to the review, and later presented at the oral exam (oral presentation of the project).

English Language Practical classes Specialistica A aims at an in-depth analysis of the English Language, to stimulate the user’s awareness in written/oral interaction in a professional setting (commercial/business interaction for tourism). The focus will be placed on specialised lexis, grammar, style, textual organisation (news articles, brochures, promotional leaflets/texts, commercial issues, etc.)

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will be able to organise their project and use English in a specific professional setting (English for Tourism/ESP), including cultural, artistic, historical issues.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Students will also be able to select the most appropriate register in relation to the topic/s and the target audience.

Linguistic knowledge and language understanding will be used at a practical level, and applied to the many disciplinary research and professional contexts.
