Course Contents
The course introduces the knowledge and the understanding of the basic tools of statistics for the analysis of tourism phenomena, with applications to real problems. Attention is focused on the analysis of raw data, aggregate data and on the study of historical series.
Reference Texts
Course notes and other material provided by the teacher, which can be found on the course page on DIR at: https://dir.uniupo.it
Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student into the main tools for statistical analysis of tourist systems and thus to develop the sensitivity and competence needed to interpret and use the results for decision-making purposes.
The acquisition of discipline is divided into three levels:
1. Definition of concepts, using examples and applications;
2. mastering the technical language;
3. Developing the ability to process the data, to comment on the results and to communicate them.
Prerequisites
Basic Mathematical Knowledge
Teaching Methods
Classroom lectures, exercises and Homeworks.
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/servicesstudents-physical-or-learning-disabilities Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Compulsory written exam and optional oral discussion.
Detailed Syllabus
Preliminary concepts:
Population, characters and their mode. Measurements. The phases of statistical detection. The tourism statistics system. Main definitions and classifications of tourism statistics, consumption and tourism expenditure, production and tourism products.
The main sources of statistics on tourism in Italy and international sources.

Data analysis
Frequency distributions and quantity distributions and their graphic representations. Cumulative Distributions.
Average values (arithmetic, quartile and fashion mean) and variability (variation ranges and variance). Concentration study: Gini's index and Lorenz's curve. Study of heterogeneity.
Joint and marginal distributions and their graphic representations. Layering and analyzing profiles: concepts of dependence and correlation. Linear correlation: covariance and linear correlation coefficient. The linear model: calculation of the parameters by the method of the minimum squares and measurement of the goodness of adaptation.

Study of aggregate data and historical series
Stock and Flows. Statistical Reports: Composition, Coexistence, Derivative and Medium Reports. Main indicators of the tourism phenomenon: indicators of the tourist offer and flow, indicators of the use of the receptive exercises.
Analysis of historical series. Incremental and variability measures of a historical series: index numbers and variation rates. "Classic" Breakdown: Finding the Trend, Seasonal Component, and Cycle.
The study of aggregates over time. Complex index numbers and major weighting systems (in quantity and in values).
Expected Learning Outcomes
1. Acquisition of the basic notions of statistics for data analysis.
2. Understanding of indices and statistical processing in the tourism and economics.
3. Ability to use statistical information for decision making purposes.
