This module explores eating disorders (EDs) from a sociological perspective, drawing on key concepts from the sociology of health, which serve as fundamental tools for analysing and interpreting the phenomena under study.

To develop a sociological understanding of EDs in light of concepts such as social construction of illness, intersectionality, stigma, categorisation and labelling.

Dopo aver introdotto la sociologia dei DA, il corso si concentrerà su: la costruzione sociale della malattia, con particolare attenzione all'approccio femminista ai disturbi alimentari; le caratteristiche sociali delle persone affette da disturbi alimentari; le implicazioni della definizione sociale di malattia in termini di risposte mediche.

At the end of the module, students will be able to: identify the main cultural and social processes that define EDs; critically reflect on categorisation, labeling, and stigmatisation practices of people suffering from EDs; recognise the cultural and social determinants of medical responses to EDs.
