The course aims to provide the conceptual and theoretical foundations to understand the environmental crisis from a socio-spatial and interdisciplinary perspective, proposing a holistic approach to the concept of sustainability from an eco-social standpoint. In particular, the concept of sustainability will be framed in terms of environmental and socio-spatial justice, highlighting their interconnections. A specific focus will be maintained on the city and the relationship between urban settlements and sustainability. Finally, the main approaches to sustainability policies will be presented, with particular attention to local and territorial ones.

The students will acquire interdisciplinary skills on topics related to eco-social sustainability, which will enable them to understand the environmental crisis and connect it to broadly defined social justice issues. They will also be able to recognize the interconnections and links between different knowledge systems and various areas related to the complex issues of sustainability and the environmental crisis.

Oral examination

The course "Models of Sustainability" aims to provide conceptual and theoretical tools regarding the themes of eco-social sustainability and the current environmental and social crisis, linking them to issues of environmental and socio-spatial justice. After presenting the main theories and approaches, the course will explore the intersection of different disciplines that address environmental issues, particularly how sociology can make a fundamental contribution to key issues. It will highlight how a holistic approach (environmental, social, economic) is crucial for addressing complex topics such as the ongoing environmental and social crisis. Among other aspects, the spatial dimension will be emphasized as increasingly relevant in the dynamics related to environmental and social justice issues, with a particular focus on the urban dimension and the relationship between settlement morphology and sustainability. Finally, the course will focus on the main approaches to policies addressing sustainability and eco-social justice, concentrating particularly on territorial and local policies.

Students will be able to navigate among the different theories of sustainability and will know how to critically connect the various disciplinary fields and knowledge systems related to eco-social sustainability, environmental justice, and socio-spatial justice. They will also be able to recognize and critically analyse policies addressing sustainability, particularly in urban contexts.
