The course is divided into two parts. In the first, the system of supranational sources of interest for labour law and their main areas of application will be reconstructed. In the second, in-depth studies on specific institutions will be carried out, also bringing students closer to the method of legal comparison.

At the end of the course the student will have a knowledge of supranational legislation of interest to labour law and will know how to apply the rules and institutions to practical cases.

The course is organised in lectures and activities requiring the active involvement of students.
Attendance is not mandatory but is
strongly recommended in order to acquire, including through classroom activities,
a greater mastery of the subject, the legal vocabulary and understanding of the
legislative texts technique that from time to time are analyzed.

There will be an intermediate test, in written form, reserved for attending students.
The final examination, for both attending and non-attending students, is written.
It is intended to test knowledge of the regulations, the ability to process and organise data and notions learnt, apply the discipline in solving practical cases.

Historical origin and sources of international labour law. The International Labour Organisation. Conventions and recommendations. The ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. The Decent Work Agenda. The main international Conventions: the so-called core labour standards. Labour standards in universal human rights protection instruments. The main UN Conventions. The Council of Europe and the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Union and its interventions in labour matters. Inspiring principles and historical evolution. The notion of “worker”. Trade union rights and economic freedoms. The flexible forms of work: part-time work (directive 97/8/EC). Fixed-term work (directive 99/70/EC). Equality and non-discrimination. The law applicable to the employment relationship with elements of internationality. Integration of gender issues: one lesson of the course will be dedicated to reconstructing the main profiles related to gender equality from a labour law perspective.

At the end of the course the student will be able to correctly identify the
sources of regulation of the various
institutes and be able to correctly
interpret and apply them.
