Course Contents
The course consists in a first part with topics related to descriptive statistics and in a second part that will concern the inferential statistics and the statistical hypothesis tests
Reference Texts
W.W. Daniel, CL. Cross Biostatistics, Tenth edition. John Wiley & Sons
Other book:
Triola MM, Triola MF. Fondamenti di Statistica per le discipline biomediche, Pearson
Learning Outcomes
The course aims to: provide methodological issues related to descriptive and inferential statistics, select the appropriate statistical method to summarize study data, interpretation of the results
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in mathematics
Teaching Methods
The course includes lectures, during which the theoretical and methodological content of descriptive and inferential statistics will be presented and discussed, and in-class practical sessions, aimed at the practical application of theoretical concepts through exercises and the analysis of real or simulated data. Self-assessment test on the Moodle-DIR platform
Additional Information
The Course material is available in the Moodle platform.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities and concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Written exam. The purpose of the exam is to verify that students are able to appropriately apply the knowledge acquired during the course by solving exercises and answering open-ended questions on the topics covered in the course syllabus. Each exercise or question will be assigned a specific score, which will contribute to the determination of the final grade, expressed on a thirty-point scale. The assessment will take into account the correctness of the procedures used, the ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques, and the clarity of the interpretation of the results obtained.
Detailed Syllabus
The frequency distribution
Measures of Central Tendency and dispersion
Properties of Probability
Probability distribution: the binomial and normal distribution
Sampling distribution
Distribution of the sample mean
Confidence interval
Hypothesis testing: a single population mean, the difference between two population means, a single population proportion
Type I and type II error and the power of a test
Chi-square test
The correlation coefficient and the regression model
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the statistical methods needed for the analysis of clinical data.
Applying knowledge and understanding: to translate the theoretical and methodological notions acquired during the course into practice, applying them concretely to the solution of data analysis exercises.
Making judgements: to independently conduct the analysis of data obtained from sample surveys, identifying and proposing appropriate methodological solutions.
Communication skills: to communicate the knowledge acquired and the results of the analyses carried out with clarity and scientific and methodological rigor.
Learning skills: to independently analyze information obtained from clinical studies, collecting and organizing data and correctly interpreting the results.
