The objective of the course is to:
Provide theoretical notions, cultural tools and experiential stimuli that allow students to enter into relationships with a deeper understanding of the situations in which they are involved.
Provide theoretical notions, cultural tools and experiential stimuli that allow students to understand and deal with the problems relating to the communication of the diagnosis, the problems in the treatment of chronic and acute patients and the relationship with patients’ caregivers.
Provide theoretical notions, cultural tools and experiential stimuli for understanding stress, coping and resilience.
Offer participants the opportunity to train themselves to grasp and understand psychological and relational distress.

The exam consists of a written test consisting of open-ended questions on the topics on the program with particular attention to those covered in class.
Verification of learning will propose a grade out of thirty which will result in an overall grade out of thirty, which aims to ascertain the actual acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.
The exam is passed if the final grade is 18/30 or higher. The highest marks with honors (30/30 with honors) can be assigned.

The course topics will be discussed also from the perspective of Gender Medicine.

The expected learning outcomes are consistent with the general provisions found within the European Qualifications Framework (Dublin descriptors) relating to knowledge and understanding. At the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate that, thanks to the content of the lessons and the study of the recommended bibliography, they have gained knowledge and understanding relating to the doctor-patient relationship and communication, both in acute situations and in chronicity; the psychological functioning of the individual with particular attention to defense mechanisms, the balance between stressors, resilience and coping resources. They should be able to use this knowledge to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills with an adequate degree of autonomy.
