Course Contents

The course aims to cover the most common obstetric and gynaecological conditions, with a particular focus on those that give rise to obstetric and gynaecological emergencies. Students will learn about the medicines used in obstetric settings and how to recognise serious conditions.

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to enable students to analyse at least one existing component or to make modifications that meet specific requirements. A more advanced objective is to providestudents with the necessary tools to devise new solutions for components or systems that achieve predetermined performance levels, by independently applying the appropriate methods of theoretical, numerical and experimental analysis.

NOTE. A specific objective is NOT ‘to know the entire field of gynaecology and obstetrics’, but ‘knowledge of it is necessary to manage the urgent medical conditions that arise in the profession’.

Students must master the fundamentals of obstetric and gynaecological signs and symptoms in order to make a prompt diagnostic assessment, particularly in the case of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies. They must also learn the fundamentals of physiology, from the ovarian cycle through to childbirth – whether spontaneous or by caesarean section – as well as the basics of obstetric and gynaecological surgery. They must be familiar with the screening tests carried out in this field and the characteristics of the most common benign and malignant conditions. It is also important to acquire knowledge of the specific medicines used in obstetrics.


Prerequisites

Students must have a knowledge of anatomy, endocrinology, general surgery and urology.

Assessment Methods
The exam will consist of a written test featuring multiple-choice questions. The final grade for the course will be awarded on a scale of thirty. Distinction (*cum laude*) may be awarded, upon the unanimous decision of the Examination Board, to students who achieve a final score of 30/30. Therefore, to obtain a score of 30/30 with distinction, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all topics covered during the course.
Detailed Syllabus

Anatomy of the Genitals – Ovarian Cycle and Contraception


- Benign gynaecological conditions (fibroids, menometrorrhagia, ovarian cysts, gynaecological emergencies, endometriosis and urogynaecology) – Malignant gynaecological conditions and an overview of screening – Gender-based violence


- Obstetric physiology and pathology (hypertension, pre-eclampsia, miscarriage and termination of pregnancy – placental disorders)


  Obstetric and gynaecological surgical procedures

The following are the expected learning outcomes for this training module: Knowledge and understanding Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
