At the end of the Integrated Course, the student will be able to:

• Identify the relevant signs, symptoms, and clinical data of the patient, in order to guide a focused nursing assessment based on functional health patterns and body systems.
• Identify the individual’s nursing care needs, both actual and at-risk, linking each nursing diagnosis to its related factors and, in the case of actual diagnoses, recognizing the defining characteristics present.
• Identify potential or actual collaborative problems, recognizing any observable signs, symptoms, and/or risk factors that may contribute to the development of the identified complications.
• Plan specific nursing interventions consistent with the identified needs and established care priorities.

Knowledge of the NANDA International taxonomy for the identification and classification of nursing diagnoses, with the ability to correlate diagnoses with related factors and defining characteristics.

Knowledge and application of Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns as a holistic and structured framework for nursing assessment of the patient.

In-depth knowledge of the main signs, symptoms, and clinical manifestations of the conditions included in the study programme, covering medical-internal, surgical, oncological, and neuro-rehabilitative areas, in order to support nursing assessment, care planning, and clinical monitoring.

• Use of case-based learning methodology in small groups, aimed at developing diagnostic reasoning skills through the presentation of clinical scenarios with increasing levels of complexity, heterogeneous variables, and multiple relevant data points.
• Simulation-based learning activities related to key clinical and care situations, designed to enhance critical thinking and clinical judgment.

Objective: formulation of nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems through the selection, interpretation, and analysis of collected data, followed by the planning of appropriate and evidence-based nursing interventions.

During the academic year, case study sessions will be simulated (see the full syllabus), including briefing and debriefing activities in small groups.

Implementation

• Presentation of the clinical case, including the following data:
• reason for admission
• current medical history (anamnesi patologica prossima)
• past medical history (anamnesi patologica remota)
• blood chemistry results
• other diagnostic tests on various samples
• home and current pharmacological therapy
• Assessment based on Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns, conducted by the student with didactic support aimed at defining the clinical rationale.
• Development of Nursing Diagnoses (ND) and Collaborative Problems (CP) and related care planning, for a total of 12 hours.

The assessment will be conducted orally through the discussion of a clinical case included in the provided handbook. The student will be required to analyse the case in order to identify the relevant Nursing Diagnoses (ND) and Collaborative Problems (CP), and to develop the corresponding care plan.

• Time allocated: 15 minutes
• Assessment type: certificative evaluation resulting in a pass/fail (competency) judgment
• Awarding of competency: based on an assessment tool shared with students at the beginning of the course.

During the year, targeted assessments will be simulated, with the identification of nursing and health care needs, and related planning, aimed at the person affected by:

• internal medicine diseases

• surgical pathologies

• oncological pathologies

• geriatric-rehabilitative-neurological pathologies

• pathologies requiring palliative care
