Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- implement the process of evidence- based practice;
- argue the research process;
- describe major research designs; and
- plan a simple research study.

Students are expected to have sufficient knowledge and ability to comprehend written English.

A bibliographic research activity involving a small group will be organized in each training hub.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.

The exam will consist in a written test, based from the summary of a scientific paper, translated into Italian, and complete with tables. The test will include 38 closed-ended questions: 7 Epidemiology and EBP, 12 Nursing Research Methodology and EBN, 7 Statistics, 12 Informatics. Type of questions, may include:
- checkboxes (more than one answer can be correct),
- true/false,
- of completion with omitted answers,
- of association.
In order to pass the test, 60% of the questions must be answered correctly. The 90-minute test will be processed and delivered via the DIR Examination system.
To achieve a 30/30 cum laude score, the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all topics covered in the course.
No penalization will be applied for incorrect/omitted. No oral tests will be held.

Introduction to nursing research:
a) Definition of nursing research, research purposes
b) Recall of EBP: stages of evidence (problem, question, research question)
c) Research paradigms
d) Type of question (therapy/treatment, diagnosis, prognosis, etiology/damage, significance)
e) Classification of primary and secondary studies

The quantitative research method:
a) PICO methodology
b) Observational/experimental study: main features of quantitative study designs
c) Type of sampling
d) Ethical principles in research
e) Main phases of a quantitative study
f) Quantitative research tools

The qualitative research method:
a) Outline of the main approaches to qualitative research
b) The main stages of a quantitative study
c) Type of sampling
d) Qualitative research tools

Researching the scientific evidence:
a) The literature review process
b) The scientific article: IMRaD format
c) Interpreting tables (e.g., meaning of p-values) and measures of association (RR, OR, NNT)
d) Databases
e) Boolean operators
f) Free/checked words
g) Search string construction
(h) Access to bibliographic resources of the UPO School of Medicine and BVS-Piedmont

Secondary Literature Presentation:
a) Guidelines
b) Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
c) Narrative reviews

The following are the expected outcomes of this module:
- Knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- define different study designs and their application in nursing research;
- describe the research process; and
- describe the process of evidence based practice.
This knowledge is acquired during theoretical lectures and classroom exercises and is assessed by a written test.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- review a simple scientific article;
- conduct the process of evidence-based practice; and
- plan a simple research study.
These skills are acquired during classroom exercises and during the computer room exercises (integrative activity), and are evaluated through written tests.
Critical thinking (making judgements)
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- analyze the results of a simple scientific article.
These skills are acquired during classroom exercises and are assessed through written tests.
