Course Contents
The course will cover the main haematological disorders, both malignant and non-malignant, from the perspectives of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.

Learning Outcomes
The educational objective of the course is to enable students to know, interpret and analyse the main haematological issues relevant to the course in a critical manner, as required by Dublin descriptor 3.
Prerequisites
The student must know the essential concepts of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pathology, and Semiotics.

Detailed Syllabus
A. General Haematology: Physiology and pathophysiology of haematopoiesis; bone marrow transplantation and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation; pathophysiology of bone marrow failure.
B. Red Blood Cell Disorders: Definition, pathophysiology, and classification of anaemias; anaemias due to impaired haemoglobin synthesis (iron deficiency anaemia, anaemia of chronic disease, thalassaemias); haemoglobinopathies; anaemias due to impaired DNA synthesis (folate deficiency anaemia and vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia); haemolytic anaemias caused by intrinsic and extrinsic red blood cell defects.
C. Haematological Malignancies: WHO classification of haematological malignancies; acute myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukaemias; chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms; myelodysplastic syndromes; mature lymphoid neoplasms (Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphomas, monoclonal gammopathies, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, and hairy cell leukaemia).
D. Disorders of Haemostasis and Coagulation: Physiology and pathophysiology of haemostasis; inherited coagulation disorders (haemophilia and von Willebrand disease); disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and thrombotic microangiopathies; monitoring patients receiving anticoagulant therapy; inherited and acquired thrombophilia; immune and non-immune thrombocytopenias.
E. Transfusion Medicine: Blood collection; pre-transfusion testing; blood components; transfusion-related complications; therapeutic apheresis.
Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and main therapeutic approaches to the major hematological disorders.
