Treatment and management of oncological emergencies
Most common toxicities associated with cancer treatments
Reference Texts
ASCo and ESMO guidelines
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and main risk factors of the most common solid tumors.
- Recognize the key clinical features and diagnostic pathways of breast, lung, colorectal, gynecological, and genitourinary cancers.
- Summarize the main principles of staging and treatment of the most common solid malignancies.
- Identify the major systemic anticancer treatment strategies, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
- Recognize the most common oncological emergencies and outline their initial assessment and management.
- Identify the most frequent toxicities associated with anticancer treatments and describe appropriate prevention, monitoring, and management strategies.
- Recognize clinical situations requiring urgent referral or multidisciplinary oncological evaluation.
- Apply basic principles of supportive care in patients receiving anticancer treatment.
Prerequisites
Clinical examination, principles of general pathology, and principles of internal medicine.
Teaching Methods
Lectures supported by slides, combined with interactive teaching through the discussion of real clinical cases.

Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Explain the basic principles of carcinogenesis and cancer epidemiology.
- Describe the general clinical assessment of patients with cancer, including ECOG Performance Status and TNM staging.
- Distinguish the main biological, clinical, and therapeutic differences between early-stage and metastatic cancers.
- Describe the main classes of anticancer treatments, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and antibody-drug conjugates.
- Recognize the most common toxicities associated with anticancer treatments and outline their basic management.
- Explain the main mechanisms of resistance to systemic anticancer therapies.
- Recognize the most relevant oncological emergencies and infusion-related reactions and describe their initial management.
- Describe the epidemiology, diagnostic work-up, staging, and main treatment strategies of breast, lung, colorectal, gynecological, prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers.
- Apply basic oncological principles to the discussion and interpretation of real clinical cases.
- Identify situations requiring urgent oncological assessment or multidisciplinary management.
