Course Contents

The course is structured in 3 parts: 1) dosimetric aspects in radiology; 2)

quality aspects, including quality control on equipment, in radiology; 3)

physics of the equipment used in radiology.

Reference Texts

Learning Outcomes

The module aims to provide basic knowledge about the operating

principles and the physical and technological characteristics of the main

equipment used in diagnostic radiology (to manage imaging acquisition

and processing procedures). The course also addresses the issue of

quality assurance and performance of quality controls on equipment ( to

acquire the necessary knowledge to use quality control, assessment and

review tools) . It also proposes to address the issue of the radiation dose

(principles of radiation protection, the principle of optimization)

Prerequisites

basic knowledge of radiation physics (definition of radiation; interaction

radiation and matter).

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons Didactic material available on the DIR teaching support

technology platform. Additional material available on:

Additional Information

Interactive course to stimulate and involve the student in learning.

Assessment Methods

WRITTEN examination (20 multiple choice questions and 3 open answer

questions) relating to the main topics covered during the course. The test

evaluates the acquired knowledge and the student's ability to apply them

in his reality. In order to achieve the knowledge and skills corresponding

to the minimum level of sufficiency, the student must demonstrate basic

knowledge and competence on the main topics covered in class with a

sufficient degree of autonomy. To achieve an advanced level, the student

must demonstrate an adequate degree of in-depth knowledge of all the

material proposed. Collegial valutation together with the other teachers

of the module.

Detailed Syllabus

part 1: summary of the current regulatory framework on radiation

protection (EURATOM 2013/59): actors involved, inspiring principles, the

figure of the Expert in Medical Physics; part2: quality controls: definition,

types, QC tube RX, QC image detectors, QC image quality; part 3:

physics: main tupes of radidiagnostic equipment (general X-ray,

fluoroscopy, mammography) part 4: dosimetry: effective dose, dosimetric

evaluation in conventional and interventional radiology, radiation

protection; dosimetric quantities

Expected Learning Outcomes

to understand (KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) and to analyse

(APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) the methodologies used

in the field of radiodiagnostics and health physics, to know (KNOWLEDGE

AND UNDERSTANDING) and to apply (APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND

UNDERSTANDING) the principles of radiation protection, to develop

critical analysis (APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) on

quality protocols (KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) and on the

procedures performed. (TRANSVERSAL SKILLS:COMMUNICATION SKILLS)

to know how to relate the Expert in Medical Physics.
