Course Contents
1) Criteria for developing a healthcare information system: theoretical framework; the role of the information system within the healthcare organization; information systems (IS) and ICT; the information flow cycle; relationships between IT systems, information systems, organizational structures, and the organization itself; the role of automation in the Public Administration; information vs. data; DBMS and data management; processes and decision-making; the role of computer networks and the Public Administration’s unified network; the IS lifecycle; example of IS development and implementation in radiology.
2) Reporting systems; administrative and decision-support reporting in healthcare: characteristics; logical flow of reports; reporting within the National Health Service (SSN); reports and IS; indicators: clinical and administrative data, MDS (Minimum Data Sets). Indicator sheets (description and critical use).
3) Overview of key healthcare information flows (SDO/hospital discharge records, Ministry-mandated flows, outpatient activity, emergency department activity, mortality data, other supplementary flows; flows involving database cross-referencing).
4) Criteria for designing a data management IT tool (from data collection to decision-making): 4.1: radiographic images and digital systems (image formation, sampling, digital image characteristics, types of digital images, compression algorithms and formats; acquisition, display, and graphic processing of images); 4.2: the DICOM standard; 4.3: radiology information systems; 4.4: Web technology and medical imaging; 4.5: Radiology information systems.

Learning Outcomes
The module aims to enable the learning of the principles underlying the design and operation of information processing systems in the healthcare sector, with a particular focus on systems used in radiology (PACS, RIS, HIS).
Prerequisites
The student must possess basic knowledge of computer science.
Teaching Methods
Video projector and computer; overhead projector; Internet connection for viewing subject-related websites.
Presentations in .pps or similar formats.
A copy of the projected slides will be made available to students.
Additional Information
The exam consists of a written test—which may include multiple-choice questions—covering topics addressed during the course. As this subject is part of an integrated course, the exam format will be determined in consultation with the course coordinator.
Students must demonstrate that they have grasped the fundamental concepts—acquired through lectures and independent study—sufficiently to apply them in their professional practice.
