Course Contents
The course aims to provide the student with the basic knowledge of the structure and function of the human body at its various levels of organisation (cells, tissues, organs and systems). At the end of the course the student should know the general organisation of the human body and the main organ systems, as a useful basis for understanding the person in the practice of the professional educator and for the study of subsequent disciplines.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with the basic knowledge of the structure and function of the human body at its various levels of organisation (cells, tissues, organs and systems). At the end of the course the student should know the general organisation of the human body and the main organ systems, as a useful basis for understanding the person in the practice of the professional educator and for the study of subsequent disciplines.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biology acquired in secondary school (organisation of the cell and of the main tissues) is useful. No compulsory prerequisites are required.
Teaching Methods
The course (2 ECTS, 16 hours, i.e. 8 hours per credit) is delivered through classroom lectures supported by slides, images and anatomical plates prepared by the lecturer. The last 2 hours take place online and are dedicated to a self-assessment exercise using educational platforms (JoVE and studenti33). Teaching material is made available on the DIR (Didattica in Rete) e-learning platform. Attendance is compulsory according to the Degree Course regulations.

Assessment Methods
The exam consists of a written test with 20 multiple-choice questions (4 options, only one correct) covering the whole programme. The test assesses knowledge of the general organisation of the human body, of the fundamental tissues and of the main organ systems, as well as the correct use of basic anatomical vocabulary. The result determines the mark of the Human Anatomy module, which contributes – together with the marks of the other modules – to the overall mark of the integrated exam; passing requires a sufficient mark (18/30) in all modules.
Detailed Syllabus
• Introduction to anatomy and histology: levels of organisation of the human body; the four fundamental tissues (epithelial, connective – including bone tissue –, muscular and nervous); solid and hollow organs; anatomical position, planes and body cavities.
• Integumentary system: the skin (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis) and the skin appendages (hair, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands).
• Locomotor system: general features of the skeleton (bone tissue; long, flat and short bones; the vertebral column and its regions; the pelvis); skeletal muscle (striated and voluntary) and the main movements (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction).
• Cardiovascular and lymphatic system: the blood (plasma and cellular component); the heart (four chambers and valves); arteries, veins and capillaries; systemic and pulmonary circulation; notes on the lymphatic system.
• Respiratory system: airways (nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi); lungs (lobes) and gas exchange.
• Digestive system: mouth, oesophagus, stomach (gastric juice), small intestine (site of absorption) and large intestine; accessory glands: liver (bile) and pancreas.
• Urinary and reproductive systems: kidneys (production of urine), urinary tract and bladder; female reproductive system (ovary) and male reproductive system (testes) and their sex hormones.
• Endocrine and nervous systems: the main endocrine glands and the concept of hormone; organisation of the central nervous system (brain – cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem – and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system; notes on the sensory organs.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding: the student knows the general organisation of the human body, the fundamental tissues and the structure and function of the main organ systems.
Applying knowledge and understanding: the student is able to recognise and describe organs and systems in general terms and to use basic anatomical vocabulary in the professional context of the professional educator.
Making judgements: the student is able to relate structure and function and to integrate anatomical notions with the other disciplines of the study programme.
Communication skills: the student is able to describe anatomical structures using correct and appropriate basic terminology.
Learning skills: the student has acquired a study method that enables them to independently update and deepen their basic anatomical knowledge.
