Learning Outcomes
At the end of course the student will be able to:
- describe the main characteristics of study designs;
- read and critique a research report;
- read and critique a systematic review;
- define the process of evidence based practice and apply it;
Prerequisites
English and statistical elements
Teaching Methods
Power point presentation and group exercises.
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
The course “Research, Quality Improvement and Outcomes” comprises the following modules: Evidence-Based Practice; Quality, Patient Safety and Evaluation of Nursing Outcomes; Statistics for Research; and Qualitative Research. The examination consists of a written test and an oral examination.

The written test consists of 24 questions: 12 on Quality, Patient Safety and Evaluation of Nursing Outcomes and 12 on Statistics for Research. The questions will be predominantly multiple-choice, with a maximum total score of 24 points. The test is designed to assess students’ knowledge of the principles of quality and patient safety, the evaluation of nursing outcomes, quality indicators, continuous quality-improvement processes, clinical audit and risk management, as well as fundamental concepts of statistics applied to research and data interpretation.

Students’ ability to read, understand and interpret the findings of a scientific article will also be assessed. The article will be made available before the examination, allowing students sufficient time to read it and critically appraise its contents.

Students may proceed to the oral examination only if they have achieved at least 60% of the maximum score available in the written test. The written test lasts 30 minutes.

The oral examination will assess students’ ability to apply the knowledge acquired through the critical appraisal of a scientific article of specific relevance to nursing. The article may involve quantitative or qualitative research and primary or secondary literature.

The oral examination will be considered passed if candidates demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the relevant theoretical concepts and an adequate ability to critically appraise a scientific article. This may include, for example, correctly identifying the research question from the abstract, accurately interpreting results tables and forest plots, and understanding the process used to conduct a qualitative study.

Failure to pass the oral examination will require the candidate to retake the entire examination, including both the written test and the oral examination, regardless of whether the written test was previously passed.

To be awarded the highest grade of 30/30 with honours, candidates must demonstrate excellent and integrated knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, together with outstanding abilities in the critical appraisal of scientific literature, data interpretation, and the application of Evidence-Based Practice principles and qualitative research methodologies.

Expected Learning Outcomes
Below are reported the expected learning outcomes of this training module:
Knowledge and understanding
Students at the end of the course can:
- describe different study designs and evaluate their applicability in nursing research
- describe the research process
- describe the process of evidence-based practice

This knowledge is acquired during theoretical lectures and classroom practice and is assessed by both written and oral examination.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.

At the end of the course, students can:
- critically analyse a research report
- conduct the evidence-based practice process.

These skills are acquired during classroom and computer-based exercises and are assessed in both written and oral examinations.
Making judgements

At the end of the course, students can assess which organisational, educational and care problems can be identified to develop a EBP process. This skill is acquired during classroom and computer-based exercises.
