Course Contents
The class is an advanced course in pharmaceutical technology, aimed at describing the concepts, strategies and technologies employed in the development and manufacturing of drug delivery systems capable of modifying drug release, absorption, distribution and eventually the fate of the drug.
Besides prolonged release dosage forms, whose obvious scope is the prolongation of the therapeutic effect, the course addresses those systems that can modulate site, onset, duration and kinetics of drug release. Different routes of administration and their potentialities are discussed and the most recent drug targeting concepts are outlined, including the prospective exploitation in personalized medicine.

Learning Outcomes
The course’s objective is to provide students with knowledge about the characteristics and functions of therapeutic systems and the ability to understand which tools and methodologies to use for the design, development and manufacture such systems. The major issues to be considered in view of the scaling up process and the translation to the clinical set are also outlined.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites, but it is recommended the gain the basic knowledge of the courses of Physical Chemistry, Physiology, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology.
Teaching Methods
The course will be provided in form of lectures, including live discussion of case studies. Lectures will be supported by multi medial tools for illustrating the educational contents. The live discussion of case studies of commercial products to will promote the active participation of students and a critical approach to the technical-scientific evaluation of said products also in view of regulatory constraints.
