Course Contents
Assessment and treatment of individuals who have injury or disease of their central nervous system such as Stroke, Balance disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Polyneuropathies, spinal cord injuries, craniocerebral trauma, motor neuron disease (ALS), permanent vegetative state.

Learning Outcomes
Students will learn the principles that rule the assessment and treatment of individuals affected by the main pathologies and serious neurological injuries
Student will also learn roles, dynamics and procedures of teamwork, as well as its importance in the rehabilitation medical departments.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS. The student will improve the knowledge of the theoretical aspects by transferring them to
the implementation of a rehabilitation project and consequent developement and application of the therapeutic program both with simulations
and during the technical-practical training.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT Using the acquired knowledge, integrating them with the expected notions, the student must be able to collect and
interpret the signs, symptoms and useful data for formulating the evaluation and a rehabilitation program according to clinical reasoning, in an autonomous way.
COMMUNICATION The student must be able, during simulations, complementary activities and practical technical training as well as
during the verification of learning, to communicate the information, the problems detected and the possible solutions to specialist and non-
specialist interlocutors.
ABILITY TO LEARN The student must be aware of what his difficulties are, in order ask for further clarifications on the topics.
Prerequisites
Students must be aware of the essential notions of anatomy, physiology, neurological pathology and kinesiology. There are no prerequisites for curricular exams.
Teaching Methods
The training objectives of the course will be achieved through face-to-face lessons and exercises. Lessons are supported by slide shows. At the request of the students, the teacher can dedicate the first part of each lesson to further clarification of the topics covered in the previous lessons. It is also possible to ask for clarification on specific points during the lesson.

Assessment Methods
Exams will be in written form with questions with multiple choice , and will verify the knowledge and expected learning results. The final grade will be determined by the degree of acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills, and will take into account the ability to synthesize and analyze, mastery of scientific language and clinical reasoning skills. To pass the exam, the student must achieve a grade not lower than 18/30 (eighteen thirtieths).
Detailed Syllabus
Rehabilitation, the physiotherapist, the working model, the rehabilitation team, the evaluation and management, the project, the programs and the results.
Definitions (muscle tone, flaccidity, hypotonia, hypertonia, spasticity, etc.) and evaluation scales.
Spinal cord injuries: epidemiology, clinical evaluation, clinical picture, rehabilitation in the acute phase and in the intensive rehabilitation phase.
TCE: epidemiology, evaluation, rehabilitation in the acute, post-acute and outcome phases.
Motor neuron disease (ALS): multidisciplinary approach, phases of the disease with related rehabilitation objectives, breathing, nutrition, aids and orthoses.
Permanent vegetative state: rehabilitation objectives and tools, post-discharge solutions.
Stroke: associated cognitive disorders; the acute phase: outcome, hospital room, observation, evaluation, posture;
the post-acute phase: sitting position, vertical position, standing position,
walking; upper limb: painful shoulder; pusher syndrome.
Balance disorders: balance, motor coordination, types of ataxias: evaluation and treatment.
Multiple sclerosis: etiology, signs and symptoms, evaluation and treatment in the various stages of the disease.
Parkinson's disease: signs and symptoms, evaluation and treatment in the various stages.
Polyneuropathy: peripheral neuropathies, Guillain Barrè syndrome, signs and symptoms. rehabilitation treatment.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Acquisition of clinical reasoning skills, evaluation and treatment of pathologies and lesions examined in the lessons.
