The course provides the essential knowledge of the main skin and mucosal diseases relevant to oral healthcare, with particular emphasis on conditions affecting the oral cavity and perioral region. Fundamental principles of dermatological and mucosal semiology will be introduced to enable students to recognize elementary lesions and to understand the clinical features of the most common disorders.The course will cover the main inflammatory, infectious, and immune-mediated diseases of the oral cavity and perioral region, including cheilitis, perioral dermatitis, oral candidiasis, viral infections of dental relevance (e.g., herpes simplex), oral lichen planus, and autoimmune blistering diseases involving the oral mucosa. In addition, the major skin cancers of the head and neck region and potentially malignant oral lesions will be discussed, with particular attention to risk factors, clinical warning signs, and the importance of early diagnosis.The course will also address the principal oral manifestations of systemic dermatological diseases, as well as key aspects of prevention, patient education, and multidisciplinary collaboration among dermatologists, dentists, and dental hygienists. Finally, the role of the dental hygienist in the recognition of suspicious lesions, patient management, and appropriate referral to specialists will be outlined.

The course aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of the main skin and mucosal diseases relevant to oral healthcare, with particular emphasis on disorders affecting the oral cavity and perioral region.Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:understand the basic principles of dermatological and mucosal semiology and recognize the main elementary skin and mucosal lesions;identify the most common inflammatory, infectious, and immune-mediated diseases affecting the oral cavity and perioral region;recognize the main potentially malignant oral lesions and the most common skin cancers of the head and neck region, understanding their major risk factors and clinical warning signs;understand the principles of primary and secondary prevention of skin and mucosal diseases relevant to oral healthcare;understand the role of the dental hygienist in the early recognition of suspicious lesions, patient education, and appropriate referral to dentists and dermatologists within a multidisciplinary care pathway.

Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skin and oral mucosa, as well as the fundamentals of microbiology, immunology, and general pathology. A basic understanding of head and neck anatomy and oral pathology is also recommended.

The course consists of face-to-face lectures supported by multimedia presentations. Teaching activities include the extensive use of clinical images and representative clinical cases to facilitate the learning of dermatological and mucosal semiology, with particular emphasis on disorders affecting the oral cavity and perioral region. Special attention will be paid to the recognition of elementary lesions, the clinical assessment of the most common conditions, and the principles of differential diagnosis through interactive discussion of clinical cases.

The final grade will be expressed on a 30-point scale and will be based on the level of knowledge acquired, the ability to describe and interpret the main clinical features of skin and mucosal diseases relevant to oral healthcare, and the appropriate use of medical terminology. Assessment will also consider the ability to recognize clinically significant skin and mucosal lesions, apply the basic principles of differential diagnosis, and identify conditions requiring referral to a specialist.The final mark will reflect the completeness and accuracy of the knowledge demonstrated, the clarity of presentation, and the ability to integrate theoretical concepts with clinical reasoning. The highest grades will be awarded to those demonstrating a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the course topics, appropriate use of technical terminology, and the ability to establish meaningful connections between different areas of the subject.

Basic principles of dermatological semiology: primary and secondary skin lesions and mucosal lesions, with particular emphasis on manifestations affecting the oral cavity and perioral region.Main infectious diseases of oral healthcare relevance: bacterial infections (impetigo), viral infections (herpes simplex virus infection), and fungal infections (oral candidiasis), including their clinical features, routes of transmission, and principles of prevention.Main inflammatory skin diseases: atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis, with particular attention to involvement of the perioral region and potential etiological factors related to dental practice.Autoimmune mucocutaneous diseases: pemphigus and pemphigoid, including an overview of their pathogenesis, oral manifestations, and principles of multidisciplinary management.Skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), with particular emphasis on major risk factors, clinical warning signs, principles of primary and secondary prevention, and the importance of early diagnosis.The role of the dental hygienist in the recognition of suspicious skin and oral lesions, patient education, and appropriate referral to the dentist or dermatologist.
