Course Contents
The course aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and fundamental skills required to recognize, clinically evaluate, and contribute to the prevention of the most common diseases affecting the oral cavity, with particular emphasis on infectious, inflammatory, immune-mediated, and neoplastic disorders.The course is designed to develop students' ability to recognize the main clinical manifestations of diseases affecting the oral cavity and perioral tissues, interpret their clinical features, and understand the role of the principal diagnostic investigations, with particular emphasis on imaging techniques used in oral medicine and dentistry.Upon completion of the course, students will be able to identify the most common abnormalities of the oral mucosa and oral tissues, recognize conditions requiring further diagnostic evaluation or referral to a specialist, understand the principles of clinical, microbiological, and radiological investigations, and collaborate, within the scope of their professional practice, in the prevention, early detection, and management of patients with diseases of the oral cavity.

Learning Outcomes

Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of anatomy and histology, with particular reference to the oral cavity and related tissues, as well as fundamental knowledge of biology, physiology, and microbiology, is required. These competencies provide the foundation for understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic methods covered throughout the course.
Teaching Methods
eaching is supported by the extensive use of clinical, histopathological, and radiological images to enhance the ability to recognize the main abnormalities of the oral cavity, interpret their clinical features, and develop an appropriate diagnostic approach. Clinical case presentations and discussions promote the integration of knowledge across the different disciplines and foster the development of clinical reasoning skills.The course also includes practical sessions focused on the interpretation of the principal diagnostic investigations, with particular emphasis on oral and maxillofacial imaging and commonly used microbiological techniques. The integrated approach involving Dermatology, Oral Pathology, Infectious Diseases, and Radiology enables students to develop the competencies required for the early recognition of oral diseases and for effective collaboration with the dental team in the prevention and management of patients with oral disorders.

Assessment Methods
Student learning is assessed through separate examinations for each module of the integrated course. Specifically, the Infectious Diseases and Oral Pathology modules are assessed by written examinations, while the Dermatology and Radiology modules are assessed through oral examinations.Each assessment is designed to evaluate the achievement of the specific learning objectives of the corresponding module, including knowledge of the topics covered, the ability to recognize and interpret the main clinical manifestations of oral diseases, apply diagnostic reasoning, and use appropriate scientific and professional terminology.To successfully complete the integrated course, a minimum passing grade of 18/30 must be achieved in each module. Failure to obtain a passing grade in any individual module results in failure of the integrated course examination.The final grade, expressed on a 30-point scale, is calculated as the weighted average of the grades obtained in the individual modules, according to the number of academic credits (ECTS/CFU) assigned to each module. The overall assessment reflects the level of knowledge and competencies demonstrated across all disciplines included in the integrated course and takes into account the accuracy and completeness of the answers, the appropriate use of scientific terminology, the ability to apply clinical reasoning, and the integration of knowledge acquired throughout the different modules.

Dermatology ModuleAnatomy and histology of the skin.Primary and secondary skin lesions and the fundamentals of dermatological semiology.Major infectious skin diseases, including parasitic, bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.Major immune-mediated and autoimmune skin diseases with cutaneous and oral manifestations, with particular emphasis on lichen planus and autoimmune blistering diseases.Benign melanocytic lesions and melanoma.Benign and malignant epithelial skin tumors and the main precancerous lesions.Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy ModulePrinciples of radiation protection and diagnostic imaging in dentistry.Fundamentals of conventional radiology and computed tomography.Dental imaging techniques: intraoral radiography, panoramic radiography (orthopantomography, OPG), computed tomography (CT), and Dentascan.Radiological anatomy of the maxillofacial region.Diagnostic imaging of the main oral and maxillofacial disorders, including dental caries, periodontal disease, odontogenic infections, cysts, diseases of the paranasal sinuses, temporomandibular joint disorders, salivary gland diseases, benign and malignant bone lesions, developmental abnormalities, trauma, foreign bodies, calcifications, and dental implant assessment.Infectious Diseases ModuleThe oral microbiota and its role in oral health and disease.Major bacterial, viral, and fungal infections affecting the oral cavity.Dental caries and periodontal diseases: microbiological and pathogenetic aspects.Viral infections of odontostomatological relevance, including HIV infection, viral hepatitis, human papillomavirus (HPV), and herpesvirus infections.Principles of infection prevention and control in dental practice.Oral Pathology ModuleAnatomy, histology, and physiology of the oral cavity and perioral tissues.Oral semiology: medical history, extraoral and intraoral examination, and description of elementary lesions of the oral mucosa.Principal diagnostic techniques, including cytological examination, microbiological culture, biopsy, vital staining, diascopy, tissue autofluorescence, chemiluminescence, laboratory investigations, sialometry, halimetry, and diagnostic imaging.Elementary lesions of the oral mucosa, including ulcerative lesions, pigmented lesions, and proliferative lesions.Oral manifestations of major dermatological and immune-mediated diseases, with particular emphasis on oral lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris, mucous membrane pemphigoid, erythema multiforme, and systemic lupus erythematosus.Infectious diseases of the oral cavity, including bacterial infections (such as syphilis, tuberculosis, actinomycosis, and gonorrhea), fungal infections (oral candidiasis and the main deep mycoses), and viral infections (HSV-1, HSV-2, varicella-zoster virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein–Barr virus, human papillomavirus, Coxsackie viruses, measles virus, and HIV).Recurrent aphthous stomatitis and burning mouth syndrome: epidemiology, pathogenesis, classification, diagnosis, and principles of management.Oral potentially malignant disorders, including leukoplakia, erythroplakia, erythroleukoplakia, atrophic and erosive oral lichen planus, oral submucous fibrosis, nicotinic stomatitis, and actinic cheilitis.Reactive soft tissue lesions of the oral cavity (epulides).Oral squamous cell carcinoma: epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, TNM staging, diagnosis, prevention, and principles of treatment.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to have acquired the theoretical knowledge and fundamental competencies required to recognize, clinically assess, prevent, and contribute to the management of the most common diseases affecting the oral cavity and perioral tissues, with particular emphasis on infectious, inflammatory, immune-mediated, and neoplastic disorders.Specifically, students will be able to:recognize the main clinical abnormalities of the oral mucosa and oral tissues;interpret the clinical features of common oral diseases and establish an appropriate initial clinical assessment;understand the indications, strengths, and limitations of the principal clinical, microbiological, and radiological diagnostic methods used in oral healthcare;identify conditions requiring further diagnostic investigation or referral to specialist care;contribute, within the scope of dental hygiene practice, to the prevention, early detection, and management of patients with diseases of the oral cavity;integrate the knowledge acquired throughout the different modules of the course in order to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to patient assessment and diagnostic decision-making.
