Course Contents
The course provides an overview of the history of hygiene and preventive medicine and their application in healthcare settings. It covers the epidemiological transition of diseases and the interpretation of epidemiological data. Basic epidemiological concepts, prevalence, incidence, and relative risk. The evidence pyramid and how to interpret a scientific article. Prevention and health promotion, with particular focus on healthy lifestyles, especially nutrition and physical activity.

- Define actions and implications of hygiene and public health - Define the concept of health - Assess the health needs of a population - Identify intervention priorities - Measure the health risks to which the population is exposed - Choose prevention interventions based on scientific evidence of effectiveness - Discuss the main health risks resulting from poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and a sedentary lifestyle - Causes and prevention interventions for infections - Understand infectious diseases and their transmission modes - Understand the main screening and vaccination campaigns

Basic knowledge of descriptive statistics
Teaching Methods
Lectures, plenary discussions, critical reading of scientific articles. Some course contents will be conveyed through readings of texts and discussions.

Written exam with 15 questions with multiple choice.

PUBLIC HEALTH CONTEXT - influence of demographic and economic trends on health and public health. HEALTH NEEDS ANALYSIS - epidemiological health indicators: incidence, prevalence, YPLL, YLD, DALY; - research methodologies for needs assessment: prevalence studies; - The Global Burden of Diseases; - health priorities and trends in Italy. RISK ANALYSIS - association indicators in etiological epidemiology: RR, OR, etc.; - attributable risk indicators: RA, QA, and NNT; - the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases and trends; - distal determinants and risk factors; - social inequalities in health; - defining a population's health priorities; PREVENTION INTERVENTIONS - natural history of a health problem and possible interventions; - primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, health promotion, and health education; - the complexity of interventions on human behavior. - evaluation of prevention interventions; - main effective prevention interventions - vaccinations and vaccination plan.
Expected Learning Outcomes
