Learning Outcomes
The module aims to prepare students with a thorough knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the main diseases and an understanding of the concepts of homeostasis, compensatory mechanisms, and decompensation. It also covers the knowledge, interpretation, and analysis of major hematological issues, as well as the most important and commonly encountered endocrine-metabolic disorders in clinical practice.
Prerequisites
To pursue teaching profitably, the student must be in possession of the essential notions of anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry and physiology.
Teaching Methods
Power-point presentations. Scientific articles from peer-reviewed journals.
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services- students-physical-or-learning-disabilities Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Multiple-choice or open-ended questions related to the study program
Detailed Syllabus
General Physiopathology: General pathology: Hemostasis. Inflammation. Thermoregulation. Fluid and electrolyte balance. Acid-base balance. Cardiovascular system and atherosclerosis. Pathophysiology of the liver. Pathophysiology of the kidney.
Endocrinology: General concepts of laboratory diagnostic evaluations in endocrinology. Hypothalamic-pituitary system and hypothalamic-pituitary diseases caused by hormonal deficiency or excess. Neuroendocrine tumors and multiple endocrine neoplasia. Disorders of thyroid function. Thyroid tumors, molecular markers, cytological markers. Calcium-phosphate metabolism and parathyroid diseases. Diseases of the adrenal cortex and medulla and their laboratory diagnostics. Hypogonadism and amenorrhea of genetic and organic origin, hirsutism. Diabetes mellitus and disorders of the endocrine pancreas. Obesity and emaciation.
Hematology: Basics of hematopoiesis. Hematological diagnostics. Anemias and hemoglobinopathies. Concepts of onco-hematology. Acute and chronic leukemias. Myeloproliferative neoplasms. Myelodysplastic syndromes. Lymphomas. Monoclonal gammopathies. Disorders of hemostasis and thrombocytopenia. Coagulation disorders. Thrombotic microangiopathies. Hereditary thrombophilia. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the courses, students must demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge outlined in the study program across the various disciplines. The primary goal is therefore to enhance their competencies regarding interpretation of diagnostic tests relating to specific pathologies.
