Learning Outcomes
Acquire skills in describing statistical data:
- understand basic terminology (population, sample, variable, etc.);
- calculate and present frequency distributions;
- describe data using graphical methods;
- calculate indices of central tendency and variability;
- analyze the relationship between two variables;
- transform data.

Provide an introduction to statistical inference:
- evaluate the probability of an event;
- binomial and Gaussian probability distributions;
- properties of the distribution of the sample mean;
- confidence interval and hypothesis testing.

Statistical tests:
- Student's t-test for paired data;
- Student's t-test for grouped data;
- chi-square test
- odds ratio (OR).

In summary, the course aims to provide the necessary foundation for:
reading scientific articles;
the presentation and statistical analysis of simple data sets for further study.
Prerequisites
The student must have mathematical knowledge corresponding to the secondary school curriculum.
Teaching Methods
Presentations in MS-WORD and MS-Power Point formats, and PDF. A short set of solved exercises is provided during the supplementary teaching activity, which are discussed in class.
Additional Information
Written exam, common to the three subjects of the integrated course (Medical Statistics, Physics, Computer Science). The exam includes a combination of multiple choice questions, open questions and calculation exercises.
