Course Contents
The course provides the fundamental theoretical and practical skills for the management and quality control of in vitro cell cultures, integrated with the preparation of tissue samples for histological analysis and molecular diagnostics. Students will learn the entire laboratory workflow, ranging from sterile cell handling to nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and sequencing.
Reference Texts
Please refer to the syllabi of the individual modules.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to handle adherent and suspension cell lines under sterile conditions and will understand the key role of anatomopathological and molecular techniques (cytology, histology, molecular biology) in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of major diseases, recognizing the impact of laboratory work quality on diagnostic accuracy.
Prerequisites
To take the course and gain access to the practical laboratory—subject to passing the required prerequisite exams—students must possess basic knowledge of human anatomy and histology, molecular biology, and the handling of biological materials, as well as an understanding of basic calculations used in chemical and biological laboratories.
Teaching Methods
Lectures in the classroom and practical exercises in the laboratory
Additional Information
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/services-students-physical-or-learning-disabilities

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Report on laboratory experiments, including an analysis of the results obtained using the various techniques employed, and a written exam with multiple-choice questions on the topics covered in class.
Detailed Syllabus
Please refer to the syllabi of the individual modules.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Apply basic protocols for the proper maintenance and sterile handling of suspension and adherent cell lines.
- Evaluate the diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive significance of key anatomical pathology and molecular biology techniques in neoplastic and inflammatory diseases.
- Recognize the critical role of technical laboratory procedures in the overall quality and accuracy of histocytopathological diagnosis.
