Theoretical Principles and Some Practical Aspects of the Main Recombinant DNA Techniques
Reference Texts
Jeremy Dale, et al. "Dai Geni ai Genomi" - EDISES (terza edizione)
James D.Watson et al. "DNA Ricombinante" - Zanichelli (seconda edizione)
Terry A. Brown"Biotecnologie Molecolari" - Zanichelli (seconde edizione)
Learning Outcomes
To provide the theoretical and practical foundations of the methods and technologies used in the study and analysis
of gene expression. Particular emphasis will be placed on recombinant DNA techniques used to
clone, express, and analyze gene products of biomedical and applied interest. To support
these topics, the module requires mandatory attendance at a teaching laboratory.
Prerequisites
Students must be familiar with basic cell biology and genetics and, in particular, with the
molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate replication, cell growth, and gene expression
programs in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and Lab Sessions
Additional Information
Additional instructional materials for support and further study are available on the DIR platform.
Students with disabilities, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or
certified Special Educational Needs (SEN) will be provided with specific services and tools
tailored to their needs.
Assessment Methods
Written Test (Multiple-Choice Questions)
Detailed Syllabus
Concept of cloning. Knowledge of the main strategies for gene manipulation. Main
characteristics of cloning vectors. Expression of recombinant proteins. Knowledge of the main
strategies for the construction and maintenance of genetically modified organisms. Knowledge of
technologies applied to genetic diagnosis. Cloning strategies and gene bank analysis. PCR:
principles and use. Targeted mutagenesis. Methods of gene transformation. Expression of transgenes
in model animals. Introduction to proteomics. Genetic strategies for the phenotypic improvement of
organisms of socioeconomic interest. Animal & Plant Farming. Cloning and DNA analysis in
forensic science and archaeology.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Acquisition of the theoretical and practical foundations of the methods and technologies used in the study and analysis
of gene expression, as well as the main techniques used to clone, express, and analyze gene products
of biomedical and applied interest. Familiarity with the equipment and working methods
of a research/analysis laboratory.
