History of criminalistics, review of forensic biology and forensic genetic laboratory methodologies, study and interpretation of single and mixed DNA profiles, evaluation of stochastic effects, use of biostatistical software for personal identification and parental relationships, BPA - Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, the role of the technical consultant in judicial field, the technical report/forensic genetic expertise, case report study
Reference Texts
Forensic DNA Typing, Forensic DNA Typing - Methodology, Forensic DNA Typing - Interpretation
Learning Outcomes
The training objectives are to provide students with the technical-interpretative tools to analyze genetic profiles in the judicial field, also evaluating them from a biostatistical point of view in order to identify and discriminate subjects within a population or to draw up simple parental relationships and complex. Illustrate the role of the biologist technical consultant in the judicial and private sectors.
Instruction will be delivered through a combination of lecture-based and interactive methods in the classroom.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of molecular biology and forensic biology
Teaching Methods
The teaching methods foster active student participation in the learning process by encouraging the development of a critical and independent mindset through engagement during classroom lectures—involving the presentation of and discussion on forensic genetics topics (including real-world case studies)—as well as through computer-based exercises designed to teach the use of biostatistical software employed in daily forensic practice.

Additional Information
Sensitive material relating to practical cases of criminal offenses

Students with disabilities, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or Special Educational Needs (SEN) may request specific services and tools tailored to their needs by contacting the Student Career Development and Coordination and Student Services Staff and by consulting the dedicated page on the University website: https://uniupo.it/it/servizi/servizi-studenti-disabili-e-dsa. Once they have established contact with the University staff, students with disabilities, SLD, or SEN may contact the course instructor to discuss the specific arrangements for exams and other teaching-related aspects.
Assessment Methods
The final assessment consists of an oral examination lasting approximately 15–20 minutes, during which the candidate will be asked at least five questions covering the entire syllabus (ranging from the forensic fundamentals of fingerprint analysis and the interpretation of mixed DNA profiles and biostatistical methods used for identification and kinship analysis, to the procedural and legal aspects of the Code of Criminal Procedure regarding the role of the court-appointed technical expert).
Candidates are also required to outline the steps involved in using biostatistical software and to draw connections to relevant articles of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The grade will be based on the technical accuracy of the answers provided and the use of appropriate technical-scientific terminology, while also evaluating the candidate's ability to integrate the various forensic concepts studied and mastered.

Detailed Syllabus
History of criminalistics, notes on dactyloscopy, analysis of human genetic polymorphisms, genetic typing, interpretation of single and mixed genetic profiles, comparisons with reference samples, biostatistical evaluations using validated software for forensic use for the calculation of RMP, RMNE and LR. analysis of paternity and kinship, construction of simple and complex pedigrees, biostatistical evaluations using software validated for forensic use (Familias), BPA - Bloodstain Pattern analysis technique for the reconstruction of the crime scene, the role of the technical consultant (regulations), bureaucratic steps for the legal profession, study and analysis of real cases.
The program takes into account the integration of the gender dimension regarding topics related to sexual and gender-based violence that are of legal and procedural interest.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Ability to read and interpret simple and complex genetic profiles, perform biostatistical evaluations, carry out paternity assessments and exclusion, analyze and reconstruct crime scenes, present technical results in a courtroom, understand the role of the forensic geneticist in the judicial field.
Knowledge and understanding: theoretical knowledge and comprehension of the topics studied.
• Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: ability to utilize skills during practical exercises and to solve problems critically.
• Making judgments: ability to gather technical-scientific data and formulate personal assessments in a critical and objective manner.
• Communication skills: ability to present the findings of a forensic genetic analysis using appropriate technical and legal terminology.
• Learning skills: possessing the foundation to independently approach reading and/or drafting a forensic biological technical report.
Achievement of minimum results: technical and critical evaluation of expert reports.
Achievement of advanced results: technical-procedural connections within the scientific-forensic field; critical ability to formulate technical observations on behalf of a party.
