The course, consisting of 36 hours, provides an introduction to the Greek language, beginning with the Greek alphabet and covering the fundamental elements of phonology, morphology and syntax, as well as the basic vocabulary of Attic Greek.

Knowledge of the main elements of Greek grammar; acquisition of a core vocabulary; ability to read and translate simple texts independently and texts of intermediate difficulty with the aid of a facing-page translation. In-class lectures correspond to 1,5 CFU, individual study to 4,5 CFU.

Written examination assessing knowledge of Greek morphology and basic syntax, together with the ability to translate a Greek text.
Grade between 18 and 22: overall sufficient knowledge of morphology and syntax, together with some difficulties in translation.
Grade between 23 and 27: more thorough knowledge of morphology and syntax, together with a good ability to translate.
Grade between 28 and 30: thorough and well-developed knowledge of morphology and syntax, together with the ability to translate independently.
Honours (30 cum laude) are awarded to students who demonstrate that they have acquired a deep and independent capacity for critical reflection on the course content.

Brief introduction to the history of the Greek language. Fundamental principles of phonology, nominal and verbal morphology. Core Attic vocabulary and elements of etymology.

KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of the basic principles of phonology and of verbal and nominal morphology in Ancient Greek.
SKILLS:
- Ability to understand the main grammatical structures of Attic Greek.
- Ability to read and translate texts written in Attic Greek.
