English Language Practical Classes aim to develop students' skills in reading comprehension, translation, and academic writing. Activities include reading comprehension exercises, translation of sentences and short texts from English into Italian, and an introduction to the fundamental principles of academic writing, with particular attention to writing style, text organisation, coherence, appropriate use of sources, and linguistic accuracy. Grammatical and lexical competence will be consolidated through integrated practical language activities.

English Language Practical Classes II aim to consolidate students' skills in reading comprehension, translation from English into Italian, and written production in English. The practical classes develop students' command of the main grammatical and lexical structures of contemporary English, with reference to the B2–B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Successful completion of the prerequisite first-year English Language examinations (Practical Classes and English Linguistics).

Practical classes focus on reading comprehension, academic writing, grammatical and lexical competence, and translation (English into Italian). Students are also expected to undertake independent study based on the materials and topics covered during the practical classes.

All students are required to have a copy of the compulsory textbooks listed in the bibliography.

Students with disabilities, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or Special Educational Needs (SEN) may request dedicated services and support by contacting the Student Services and Career Development Office. After contacting the relevant University Office, students may get in touch with the course instructor to discuss any necessary accommodations regarding examination procedures and other teaching-related matters.

GENERAL ENGLISH: WRITTEN EXAM (1 hour and 30 minutes). The written examination consists of the translation of sentences or a short text from English into Italian, and the writing of a 300-word paragraph based on a prompt on a familiar topic. The examination is designed to assess students' ability to understand and accurately translate the grammatical, morphosyntactic, and lexical structures of contemporary English into Italian, as well as their command of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and the organisation of written texts. The final mark is the average of the marks obtained in the two components of the examination. Students must achieve a minimum mark of 18/30 in each component in order to pass the examination. With reference to the Intended Learning Outcomes, the following marks correspond to different levels of achievement: 18–22/30 (basic), 23–25/30 (satisfactory), 26–28/30 (good), and 29–30 with honours (excellent). Oral interaction skills, including discourse organisation, pronunciation, vocabulary, morphosyntactic accuracy, and linguistic appropriateness, will be assessed by the course instructor as part of the English Linguistics A examination.

English Language Practical Classes II are based on the textbooks listed in the bibliography and on additional materials distributed during the practical classes (see the Practical Classes pages on DIR).

Students will be able to understand written texts at the B2–B2+ level, demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles of academic writing, and translate sentences and short texts from English into Italian, applying appropriately the main grammatical and lexical structures of contemporary English.
