Knowledge (basic level): - a basic understanding of the transition from Latin to the Romance languages; - knowledge of the main phonetic and morphological features of the various Romance languages; - a basic understanding of the key periods and developments in medieval literary history. Knowledge (advanced level): - in-depth knowledge of the phonetic and morphological phenomena characterising the transition from Latin to the Romance languages and defining the languages themselves; - in-depth knowledge of the main periods and developments in medieval literary history. Skills (basic level): - the ability to identify the specific linguistic features of a given Romance language; - the ability to independently address and critically analyse a problem in Romance linguistics. Competences (advanced level): - the ability to identify, recognise and comment on the specific linguistic features of a given Romance language; - the ability to independently address and critically analyse themes and issues in Romance linguistics and literary history. Transversal skills: - refinement of the ability to present the topics covered in lectures and studied independently.

Basic knowledge usually acquired at high school. A critical and inquisitive mind.

The final exam includes an oral exam (30 minutes), in which the knowledge inserted between the objectives and the learning outcomes will be verified. The exam is divided into two sections: 1) linguistics (topics covered in class and study of one of the two recommended volumes about Romance linguistics); 2. literary history (study of one of the two recommended volumes). Point 1. will weigh 50% of the final grade, point 2. 50%. Honours will be awarded based on acuity, depth, and ability to process the answer.

he module is organized in 15 didactic unities. Following topics will be treated: - The phonological system of Latin and that of the Romance languages; - variety; in Latin and Romance languages; - the substrate; - the superstrate; - the languages of medieval and modern Europe; - traits of historical phonetics of the main Romance languages; - traits of historical morphology of the main Romance languages; - elements of syntax; - geolinguistics; - toponymy and antroponymy; - sample reading of passages in some Romance languages. Non attending students will choose a program with the teacher.

In order to attain the knowledge, competences and skills corresponding to the basic level, students are required to demonstrate that they: - (knowledge and understanding): have acquired a fundamental understanding of the topics covered in the course and to be studied in the course textbooks; - (ability to apply knowledge and understanding): are able to recognise a linguistic-literary phenomenon studied in actual Romance linguistic-literary works; - (independent judgement): be able to discuss themes and topics covered in class or studied independently; - (communication skills): be able to present, in Italian and demonstrating mastery of the language of the discipline, the knowledge acquired during the course and through independent study; - (learning skills): be able to use the methodological tools provided in class or made available for independent study. To achieve an advanced level, the student must demonstrate: - (knowledge and understanding): in-depth and precise knowledge of all topics covered in class or assigned for independent study; - (ability to apply knowledge and understanding): the ability to situate linguistic and literary phenomena within a broad historical and cultural context.
