On the theoretical level, the courses aim at providing students with a theoretical awareness in Spanish phonetics, phonology, morphology and morphosyntax. On a practical level, the aim is the acquisition of a competence in the Spanish language corresponding to CEFR B2 level.

Students must have passed the first-year exam of SPANISH LANGUAGE. It is also preferable that they have already passed the first-year exam of GENERAL LINGUISTICS.

At the beginning of the academic year, a vademecum is published on all DIR pages for Spanish Language and Linguistics. It provides detailed information on examinations, exam sessions, students with specific learning disorders and compensatory measures, Erasmus, and other academic matters. This document is compulsory reading for all students.

A) SPANISH LINGUISTICS A: written exam [2 hours and 30 mins] consisting of: 2 theoretical-practical exercises on the contents of phonetics, phonology, and morphosyntax; 2 open-ended questions on the theoretical contents of the course; 1 translation from Spanish into Italian, with a commentary on the main phenomena studied.
B) SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING II: B1. written exam [2 hours and 30 mins], consisting of: approx. 5–8 exercises on the grammatical contents of the course and 1 written production [approx. 180 words]; B2. oral exam, aimed at assessing the acquisition of linguistic knowledge and communicative skills [CEFR B2 level], also based on the compulsory reading. N.B. The written exam will be considered passed if at least 60% of the answers provided in the grammar exercises are correct. Passing the written test is required in order to access the oral exam.

GRADING: The final grade will correspond to the average of the grades obtained in the two partial modules [A = 50%, B (average between B1 and B2) = 50%]. To pass the exam, students must achieve a passing grade in all tests.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: The exam will be considered excellent if it demonstrates: (A) excellent knowledge of the theoretical contents of the course and the ability to rigorously analyse the main phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic phenomena of Spanish from a contrastive perspective with Italian; full command of the relevant terminology, excellent presentation skills, and appropriate use of examples; a correct translation appropriate to the context, accompanied by an accurate commentary on interlinguistic differences; (B1) full command of the grammatical structures and uses of the language, with a written production that is accurate, coherent, and appropriate to level B2; (B2) the ability to communicate fluently on relatively complex topics, using correct syntactic structures and a broad and appropriate vocabulary. The exam will be considered satisfactory if it demonstrates: (A) good knowledge of the fundamental contents of the course; the ability to correctly describe the main phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic phenomena of Spanish, despite minor inaccuracies; good command of the relevant terminology, appropriate presentation skills, and use of examples; an overall correct translation and an adequate commentary on the main interlinguistic differences; (B1) good command of the grammatical structures and uses of the language, with an overall correct written production; (B2) the ability to communicate clearly and appropriately, despite occasional morphosyntactic or lexical inaccuracies. The exam will be considered sufficient if it demonstrates: (A) essential knowledge of the contents of the course; the ability to describe the main phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic phenomena of Spanish, although not always precisely; essential use of terminology and examples; an overall correct translation, with some inaccuracies and a limited commentary on interlinguistic differences; (B1) essential command of the grammatical structures and uses of the Spanish language, with a substantially correct written production; (B2) the ability to communicate comprehensibly on relatively complex topics, using generally correct structures and a largely adequate vocabulary. The exam will be considered insufficient if it demonstrates: (A) serious gaps in the knowledge of the theoretical contents of the course; limited knowledge of the main phonetic-phonological and morphosyntactic phenomena, inadequate use of terminology and examples; an insufficiently accurate translation and an inadequate commentary on interlinguistic differences; (B1) insufficient knowledge of the grammatical structures and uses of the Spanish language, with a written production showing significant difficulties in the use of verbs, connectors, and syntax; (B2) communicative competence below the B2 level, characterised by frequent grammatical errors and limited or inappropriate vocabulary.

SPANISH LINGUISTICS A: the main phonetic-phonological phenomena of Spanish will be examined, and, from a contrastive and translation perspective, the morphology, functions, uses, and syntactic rules of stressed and unstressed personal pronouns, articles, demonstratives, possessives, quantifiers, the prepositional accusative, ‘ser’ and ‘estar’ (predicative and attributive uses), the indicative and the conditional.

SPANISH LANGUAGE TRAINING II: Spanish grammar; listening and reading comprehension, written and oral production; Hispanic culture. Grammar contents: review of the past tenses of the indicative mood of all regular and irregular verbs; completion of the study of Spanish orthographic norms, and of regular and irregular verb morphology; use of the future, conditional, affirmative and negative imperative [with personal pronouns]; conjunctions and adversative expressions; dubitative and exclamatory sentences; use of the subjunctive and contrast with the indicative; hypothetical clauses and conditional sentences; noun clauses, indirect interrogative clauses, final, temporal, causal, concessive, and relative subordinate clauses; prepositional complements governed by the main Spanish verbs; verbal periphrases with infinitive, participle, and gerund; verbs expressing change and transformation.

The knowledge, competences and skills related to the two modules are integrated both at a theoretical and practical level.
At the end of the course, students will achieve the following learning objectives:

KNOWLEDGE:
1. knowledge of the phonetic-phonological system, morphology and basic morphosyntax of the Spanish language;
2. knowledge of the Spanish linguistic norm and its main varieties, also from a contrastive perspective with Italian;
3. knowledge and recognition of the main grammatical, communicative and pragmatic data required for interlinguistic communication in relation to CEFR B2 level.

SKILLS/COMPETENCES:
1. ability to recognise, analyse and describe the main phonetic-phonological, morphological and morphosyntactic phenomena of Spanish, also based on concrete examples and from a contrastive perspective with Italian;
2. ability to apply the acquired linguistic knowledge to translation from Spanish into Italian, identifying the main structural divergences and adopting solutions appropriate to the context;
3. ability to understand complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, interact with a certain degree of fluency and spontaneity in Spanish, and produce clear and structured texts on a wide range of topics, in line with CEFR B2 level.
