The course aims first of all at introducing students (referring to a basic level and to an advanced level) to the knowledge and understanding of some of the most important themes and authors of the Philosophy of Religion in the modern age, showing then in a deeper way with reference to contemporary horizon Italo Mancini’ s reflection about God and Luigi Pareyson’s thought about originary freedom. The course aims also at offering students tools to understand in an autonomous way a text of the Philosophy of Religion and to express a reasoned judgment about it.

A basic knowledge of the modern and contemporary history of philosophy is required.

The course will be held in person with lectures and seminars.

During the oral examination the knowledge of the principal aspects of a wide content and its historical context will be tested (40%); then the analytic and synthetic understanding of a more specific content with peculiar attention to the correctness of the exposition will be tested (30%); at the end the commentary of a text explained during the lectures and a critical and autonomous judgment about it will be required (30%). The questions (at least three) will concern the three aspects mentioned before and the final mark will be given with reference to the indicated percentages. To achieve a sufficient mark, the student must show to know and understand the basic aspects of themes and authors of the programme. To achieve an excellent mark, the student must show to know and understand in depth all the topics investigated.

During the course first of all the status of philosophy of religion and the positions of Kant, Schleiermacher, Hegel and Schelling will be presented.
Then the course will present, on one hand, the evolution of Mancini’s thought about the nexus between philosophy and religion which leads him first to put in relation hermeneutics of revelation and classical metaphysics and then to focus his attention explicitly on the logic of the double thoughts subtended to Christian paradox. On the other hand, it will analyse the principal phases of Pareyson’s philosophy with special reference to hermeneutics opened by ontology of inexhaustible and to Christian tragic thought implied by ontology of liberty.
In the course some texts of the two philosophers will be read and explained and it will be showed above all the relations of identity and difference which can be found between their theoretical positions about the configuration of notions like being, God, freedom, ambiguity, symbol and concept.

It is expected that students can orientate themselves in an adequate way in knowing and understanding (also applied) of the proposed contents and that they learn how to use some essential critical tools to express in an autonomous and operative way a personal judgment about these contents.
