Course Contents
Chemical phenomena relevant to the environment and analysis techniques. Pollutants in the hydrosphere. Pre-treatment methods and pre-concentration of the sample. Methods of water sanitation and purification.
Reference Texts
Copies of the slides shown during the course will be available on. together with the lecture notes. Moreover, the following texts are recommended:
Colin Baird “Chimica Ambientale”, Zanichelli editore
Stanley E.Manahan, “Environmental Chemistry”, Lewis Publishers
Slides provided by the teacher
Specific material for possible in-depth studies will be suggested during the course.
Learning Outcomes
Objective of the course is to supply knowledge and the ability to use methods useful for the comprehension and the management of the environmental problems. Communication skills: the students will be able to use a suitable chemical vocabulary in relation to the techniques described in the course and to write report on the result obtained from the application of these techniques. Abilities: the students will be able to select and apply the correct technique to face environmental problems. He will develop the ability in making judgements from the results obtained by the application of the techniques and learn how to use new statistical tests.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of analytical chemistry
Teaching Methods
Classroom lecture with particular attention for the application to real cases.
Additional Information
The knowledge will be evaluated during the entire course since at the start of every lesson the concept explained in the previous one are recalled and eventually explained again if necessary.
Assessment Methods
Oral exam in which a simulation of real environmental case is faced.
Detailed Syllabus
Mechanisms of diffusion, transformation, degradation and accumulation. Long-lasting pollutants in the environment. Identification and determination of pollutants in water. The purifier, the disinfection system for drinking water, legal requirements. Chemical methods of water remediation. Choice of instrumental technique for monitoring remediation and purification.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge of the complexity of the environmental system and the description of environmental compartment hydrosphere
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Ability to deal with a real problem in the environmental field starting from the analysis of the problem and interaction with the client up to the realization of the actual analysis and the interpretation of the results. Making judgments: Ability to critically analyze a real case proposing solutions.
Communication skills: Ability to report on chemical-scientific topics in a precise, concise and clear way. Mastery of an adequate scientific language.
Learning skills: Ability to use the teaching material for a critical and reasoned study, also for a subsequent autonomous acquisition of superior knowledge and for continuous updating.
