Help in the social service from the point of view of the person-user (the tension towards welfare, the ability to act, participation in the process of help) and from the point of view of future social workers (levels of social intervention, methodological process, social service models, approaches and paradigms, trifocality, reciprocity).

The main tools for social work: interview, professional writing, home visit, meetings, working with groups

Across the course will be considered, observed and studied the dimension of the power of the social worker thanks to contributions of professionals and social work scholars in the national and international field (indications of the teacher in itinere and bibliography).

The course aims to provide the fundamental concepts related to the aims and methodology of social work in general, and the functions of the social worker in particular. These concepts will be addressed by highlighting the connections with the reference principles of social service and placing them within the framework of the contributions of some authors (national and international) in the field of helping professions.

Main objectives:
- Bringing students closer to the exercise of their professional role based on the main methodological and theoretical foundations that support the action in situation and in relation to the organizational dimension in which the professional is inserted
- Promotion of a reflective and cognitive capacity that supports the reading of social phenomena of interest to the communities in which the social service can intervene.
- Increase in reflexive capacity in relation to the exercise of the role professional with reference to the views of the people-users and the need to recognize its power in the relationship of aid implemented together with individuals, families, groups.
- Approach to reflection on the pervasiveness of the ethical dimension of social work, with attention to dilemmatic choices.
- Promotion of a first foreshadowing of the role of the social service in the context of networking.

Lectures, interactions with experiences narrated and acted as witnesses

Oral examination (intermediate written examination can be assessed in itinere)

-Social work. Characteristics, object, objectives, lines of demarcation between social work and clinical work.

-The view of social work on the problems of people’s lives: needs, problems, capacity for action, concern for well-being (the bio-psychosocial model of action as a means of reconsidering the temptation to focus solely on the individual dimension of problems)

- Fundamentals of knowledge and action of professional social service with precise reference to the perspective of networking: The method (and its interweaving with the ethical dimension)

-The main models, paradigms, reference approaches in the field of Italian and international social service.

-The methodological procedure. The phases, the relationship positioning, the decision-making processes, the assessment, the design, the reflective action, the possible participation, the evaluation process.

-The main tools for social work: interview, professional writing, home visit, meetings, working with groups, overview of AMA groups

-The professional relationship:emotional implications and operational aspects in the construction of the relationship, perspectives and critical nodes, also in relation to the dimension of social work with the organization and with the territory.

-The professional self: recognition of stereotypes and prejudices; reflexivity; relationship with error; power.

-The power of the social worker: reflections, case studies, research.

At the end of the teaching, the student will be able to master the fundamental analytical distinctions that are the basis of the professional action of the social worker, having addressed a reflective learning path on the main tools used by professionals, with an important reference to the point of view of people -users. In general it will be able to differentiate and interconnect the disciplinary levels of aid practices with particular reference to the specific responsibilities of the professional social service, in a multidimensional reading of the institutional context, cultural and personal problems.
