Course Contents
The present module joins the Physiology 1 module with the aim of allowing the learning of the principles that determine and regulate the functional activity of the human respiratory system and provide an experimental knowledge on how to study them. It also proposes to clarify the bases of diagnostic procedures used in medical practice and to deepen the knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of some experimental techniques used in basic and applied medical research

Learning Outcomes
The educational objectives are aimed at learning the principles that determine and regulate the functional activity of the human respiratory system
Prerequisites
The student must know the essential concepts of Anatomy, Histology, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry
Teaching Methods
Presentations in MS-Power Point format, and educational websites. Students will receive a PDF copy of the projected slides. If necessary, distance Learning will also be used.
Additional Information
Through the DIR educational platform. Students will be able to take advantage of the images projected in class, audio / video recordings of the lessons, additional in-depth material and some Clinical Physiology exercises
Assessment Methods
The exam will take place orally and the vote will be expressed out of thirty.
The knowledge and skills possessed by the student will be assessed on the basis of the criteria listed below where the minimum level of sufficiency is expressed by the grade 18/30 and the level of excellence is expressed by the grade of 30 cum Laude.
30 cum Laude
The student responds with absolute language properties and expresses the topics covered in class for particular purposes, demonstrating that he has followed carefully. He manages to make precise connections with the clinic.

The student has an in-depth knowledge of the physiological data and mechanisms; autonomously establishes relationships between them, reconnects them in coherent and logical schemes and critically evaluates them both in terms of internal evidence and culturally based external criteria. He masters the language from a technical and semantic point of view.
from 26 to 24
The student knows the data widely, proposes them in a clear and detailed way; he exposes with ease, reorganizes and re-elaborates concepts, draws deductions, demonstrates mastery of methods and tools, proceeds to clinical correlations.
from 23 to 21
The student knows the data and the physiological mechanisms and exposes them correctly; he connects concepts with confidence and knows how to explain them; is able to make some correlation with the clinic.
from 21 to 18
The student knows the data and the physiological mechanisms, describes them in a simple, though not always rigorous, way; captures the essential sense of information, produces knowledge in an elementary but overall correct way.
INSUFFICIENT
The student knows data and notions in a fragmentary way, explains the concepts in an imprecise way and not autonomously; he is unable to use his knowledge to make correlations with the clinic.
Detailed Syllabus
Respiratory System. Respiratory mechanics. Volumes and lung capacity. Respiratory compliances. Dead breathing spaces. Ventilation-perfusion ratio. Alveolar gaseous exchanges. Transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. Respiratory quotient and basal metabolism. Chemical and nervous regulation of respiratory activity. Hypoxia. Role of respiratory activity in control of acid-base balance.
Expected Learning Outcomes
The expected results consist in the acquisition by the students of the mechanisms that underlie the normal functioning of the organs and systems of the human body. These concepts will form the basis for learning human pathologies and related therapies
