Lucan and the horror of the empire

History of literature: G. Garbarino - L. Pasquariello, M. Manca, Roma senza tempo, Pearson Paravia 2022. The other texts will be provided in class.
Students wishing to purchase an edition of Lucanmwith the text opposite can turn to any complete edition.

In class I will illustrate the characteristics of the different editions. For students who attend lessonsI don't recommend one in particular; indeed, it is interesting to have more translations available in class.

Knowledge and understanding of the characters of Latin poetry. Acquiring a good knowledge of the characters and the historical development of subjective and epigrammatic poetry; Deepening the knowledge of the Latin language in its morphological and syntactic structures.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Ability to analyze the content and stylistic characters of a narrative text and to relate them to the characteristics of the literary genre they belong to. Ability to identify the linguistic structures of a Latin text and the main rhetorical figures in it and to relate them to the characteristics of the literary genre they belong to.
Expression of Judgments: Ability to identify in a text the typical characters of the literary genre and to evaluate the elements of originality. Ability to operate comparisons between different texts. Ability to recognize and appreciate in a text the purposes associated with the author's formal choices.
Communication skills: Ability to clearly and orderfully explain the concepts and data learned, demonstrating the mastery of specific terminology in addressing literary, linguistic and stylistic issues. Ability to easily translate the texts being tested, demonstrating that they can orient themselves in language structures, avoiding mnemonic repetitions.
Ability to study: Ability to study independently and to use the bibliographic tools indicated.

Mastery of morphology and syntax of the Latin language at upper secondary level. Knowledge of the historical development of Latin literature with particular attention topoetic production.

Lectures in class.

It is essential to know how to read the texts in metrics. Metric reading will be taught in class, or will have to be learned independently.

The exam consists of a written translation test and an oral part. Written and oral are not mutually barred, can be sustained independently and their grades declined independently. The final grade is an average between written and oral. It is possible to get a positive evaluation even if there is a negative test (if the average is positive), but penalties will be applied (final vote = (average + 18) / 2).
The written test, with a total duration of 3h, consists of a translation.
Oral examination will take place with this general structure. 1) reading (please pay attention to the accents), translation and grammatical-syntactic analysis of two of the Latin texts to be taken to the examination, with reference to the themes illustrated in lesson and deepening of some aspect; non-attending students must prepare Catullus, 1-60; a question about the institutional part. The authors to be studied are Livius Andronicus, Naevius, Plautus, Ennius, Pacuvius, Accius, Terentius, Lucilius, Lucretius, Cicero, Caesar, Vergil, Horace, Ovid, Phaedrus, Seneca, Lucan, Persius, Petronius, Silius Italicus, Valerius Flaccus, Statius, Tacitus.
Knowledge of the 600 basic words of Latin Language.

Depending on the discussion, the exam interview may of course take different paths to allow the teacher to make a fair assessment.
The exam is evaluated cum laude when all the tasks are perfectly attained.

We expect a significant basic competence on the poetic subjective genre to be released, addressed in the original language (50%) and a substantial improvement in the skills related to Latin (50%).
